Recycled Asphalt Pavement Mixes Have Different Cure Requirements — Not All Bitumen Is the Same

A new retail development carpark at Waurn Ponds was ready for marking according to the developer's program. We arrived at 21 days post-lay — our standard minimum. The surface temperature was fine, no visible moisture. We applied thermoplastic. Within two months, lifting was occurring in the high-cycle entry zones.

We investigated. The developer's asphalt contractor had used a Recycled Asphalt Pavement mix — RAP bitumen — which has a higher polymer content than standard virgin bitumen. RAP mixes retain volatiles for longer during cure and the modified polymer binder means standard 14-21 day cure protocols are insufficient. RAP asphalt typically needs 28-35 days minimum before thermoplastic application, and some formulations benefit from a specific primer to ensure bond compatibility with the modified binder chemistry.

Nobody had told us the mix type. We hadn't asked. We now ask specifically about the asphalt mix type on every new-lay asphalt quote — virgin dense-graded, open-graded, RAP content percentage, or polymer-modified. If it's RAP or polymer-modified, we extend the cure window and specify an appropriate primer. It's one question that takes 30 seconds and prevents a rework.

Waurn Ponds is Geelong's southern growth corridor — Deakin University precinct, the Gateway Road retail strip, logistics expanding south from the Geelong core, and new residential and commercial development. VicRoads approved. We've been completing Waurn Ponds and southern Geelong marking since 2009.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Waurn Ponds retail developments, Deakin precinct carparks, and commercial facilities are part of our southern Geelong schedule. Asphalt mix type confirmation on every new-lay carpark quote — RAP and polymer-modified bitumen require extended cure protocols.

RAP stands for Recycled Asphalt Pavement — reclaimed bituminous material blended with virgin material in new mixes to reduce cost and environmental impact. RAP mixes often have higher polymer content and retain volatile compounds longer than virgin dense-graded asphalt during the cure process. Standard 14-21 day protocols may be insufficient. We recommend 28-35 days for confirmed RAP mixes and specify a polymer-compatible primer.

Ask your asphalt contractor for the mix design specification document. It will list the RAP content percentage. Alternatively, ask whether the mix is virgin dense-graded, SMA, open-graded, or recycled content. If the contractor can't provide a mix design document, treat it as a potentially modified mix and apply the extended cure window as a precaution.

Yes. We work with the project manager or site supervisor to schedule marking into the practical completion program, confirming the asphalt lay date and specifying the earliest marking date based on mix type. We provide this scheduling confirmation in writing as part of our quote.

Yes. VicRoads approved. City of Greater Geelong Council specifications for local roads. Traffic management to AS 1742.3. Thermoplastic with retroreflective glass beads for all external road and carpark surfaces.
