A Stop Line at the Top of a Steep Ramp Is Not Enough — You Need Hazard Marking Too
A Coburg North SME manufacturer had us mark their loading dock area including a stop line at the top of the kerb ramp approach. Standard work. Their council building code officer attended an unrelated inspection and noted the kerb ramp gradient was steeper than 1:8 in the marked zone. Under the NCC, gradients steeper than 1:8 in pedestrian and vehicle shared access zones require additional hazard marking — diagonal hatching in a contrasting colour around the ramp transition to alert pedestrians to the change in gradient.
We hadn't assessed the gradient during the scope. We'd marked what was asked — a stop line — without identifying that the adjacent kerb ramp created an NCC hazard marking obligation. We went back and added the gradient hazard hatching. Not a major rework, but the original quote should have included it. Gradient assessment at ramps and level changes is now a standard part of every loading dock and access approach assessment we do in Coburg North.
Coburg North sits in Merri-bek City's northern industrial fringe — the remnant textiles and garment manufacturing buildings that defined the area decades ago now house SME manufacturers, food businesses, and light industrial operators. The building stock is older on average and the loading dock configurations were designed for a different era of vehicle. Non-standard ramp profiles and tight manoeuvring areas are common.
VicRoads approved. We've been marking Coburg North and the Merri-bek industrial corridor since 2009. Gradient and ramp assessment is now standard on every Coburg North loading dock and access approach quote.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Coburg North SME manufacturing facilities and loading docks are part of our regular inner-north Melbourne Merri-bek schedule. Gradient and ramp hazard marking assessment included in every loading dock approach quote — NCC obligations identified before scope is agreed.
The NCC identifies gradients steeper than 1:8 (12.5%) in pedestrian and shared vehicle-pedestrian access zones as requiring additional hazard treatment. Kerb ramps, loading dock approaches, and level transitions that exceed 1:8 typically need diagonal hatching in a contrasting colour to alert pedestrians to the gradient change. We measure gradient at every ramp and level transition during the loading dock assessment.
Yes. Stop lines, gradient hazard hatching, pedestrian separation zones, dock approach delineation, and forklift path markings are all within our standard loading dock scope. We identify what's required during the assessment and include all elements in the quote.
A standard Coburg North SME warehouse of 1,500-3,000 square metres: one overnight session. Loading dock approaches and external areas typically added the following night.
