Line Marking Coburg North VIC

A Coburg North SME manufacturer had us mark their loading dock area including a stop line at the top of the kerb ramp approach. Standard work. Their council building code officer attended an unrelated inspection and noted the kerb ramp gradient was steeper than 1:8 in the marked zone. Under the NCC, gradients steeper than 1:8 in pedestrian and vehicle shared access zones require additional hazard marking — diagonal hatching in a contrasting colour around the ramp transition to alert pedestrians to the change in gradient.

We hadn't assessed the gradient during the scope. We'd marked what was asked — a stop line — without identifying that the adjacent kerb ramp created an NCC hazard marking obligation. We went back and added the gradient hazard hatching. Not a major rework, but the original quote should have included it. Gradient assessment at ramps and level changes is now a standard part of every loading dock and access approach assessment we do in Coburg North.

Coburg North sits in Merri-bek City's northern industrial fringe — the remnant textiles and garment manufacturing buildings that defined the area decades ago now house SME manufacturers, food businesses, and light industrial operators. The building stock is older on average and the loading dock configurations were designed for a different era of vehicle. Non-standard ramp profiles and tight manoeuvring areas are common.
