Why Proper Warehouse Markings Are a WHS Requirement, Not a Nice-to-Have?

Three weeks ago, a warehouse manager in Campbellfield called us at 7pm on a Friday. Their Monday safety audit had been moved up to Tuesday. The forklift lanes were faded beyond recognition. Pedestrian walkways? Barely visible. They faced potential shutdown if markings weren't fixed.

We assessed the site Saturday morning, quoted by lunch, and had a crew marking the floor Sunday night. 2,400 linear metres of safety markings completed in one eight-hour shift. The audit passed Tuesday with zero non-conformances.

That's not a one-off. We've done emergency warehouse marking jobs in Truganina, Somerton, Wetherill Park, and Eagle Farm. The story is usually the same: markings gradually fade, nobody notices until an audit or near-miss, then suddenly it's urgent.

We learned early on that warehouse floors are brutal on standard paints. Back in 2014, we used road-marking paint in a Dandenong South warehouse. Looked great for about six weeks. Then the forklift traffic started grinding it away. By month three, it was mostly gone. We had to redo the entire job with proper two-pack epoxy at our cost. That $6,000 lesson taught us to always match materials to traffic conditions.

Campbellfield, VIC

Logistics Operations Manager

Forklift lanes, pedestrian walkways, hazard zones, equipment boundaries. Entire factory floor done in one 10-hour overnight shift. Production started Monday morning as normal. Zero downtime. Safety manager signed off immediately.

Derrimut, VIC

Plant Manager

Previous layout completely wrong. They ground off everything using diamond grinders, no ghosting, no shadows visible. New markings went down perfectly on clean surface. Should have called them first. Lesson learned.

Truganina, VIC

Facility Manager

High-traffic warehouse entrance was destroying standard paint every six months. They recommended Grade A thermoplastic rated to 50°C. Three years later still looks fresh. Should have done it from the start. Worth every dollar.

Somerton, VIC

Warehouse Manager

Distribution centre floor marking completed over Christmas shutdown. 3,800 square metres, forklift lanes, pedestrian zones, loading dock boundaries. Crew flew in, job done in three nights. Back to operations Boxing Day. Smooth as.

Frequently Asked Questions

Forklift lanes should be minimum 1.8 metres wider than your widest load. For a standard counterbalance forklift, that typically means 3.5-4 metre lanes. Pedestrian walkways need minimum 1 metre width, ideally 1.2 metres. We measure your equipment and loads during site assessment to specify correct widths.

Standard acrylic floor paint is walkable in 2-4 hours, light traffic in 24 hours, full forklift traffic in 72 hours. Two-pack epoxy cures faster: walkable in 6-8 hours, full traffic in 24-48 hours depending on temperature. We plan around your operational schedule to minimize disruption.

Sometimes. If existing markings are well-adhered and you're not changing layout, we can paint over after thorough cleaning. If there's peeling, oil contamination, or layout changes, we recommend removal first. Painting over failing markings just means the new layer fails too. We assess during site visit and advise honestly.

Two-pack epoxy is a chemical-cure coating that bonds to concrete at molecular level. It's harder, more abrasion-resistant, and handles forklift traffic far better than acrylic paints. It costs more and requires proper mixing, but in high-traffic areas it lasts 3-5 times longer.

Yes, we work around operational warehouses all the time. We can mark in sections while other areas remain operational, work around fixed racking, and accommodate equipment that can't be moved. Our crews are experienced in working safely in active warehouse environments.

AS 1318 specifies: yellow for traffic lanes and caution areas, white for pedestrian walkways, red for fire equipment and no-go zones, green for safety equipment and first aid, blue for mandatory actions. Most warehouses use yellow forklift lanes with white pedestrian paths.
