Why Pedestrians Need Visible, Protected Paths Through Vehicle Areas?

A logistics facility in Derrimut called us after a near-miss where a forklift almost hit a worker crossing an aisle. There was no designated crossing point. Pedestrians walked wherever was convenient, forklifts took the shortest routes, and everyone hoped for the best. The safety manager needed a system, not hope.\n\nWe designed a complete pedestrian network. White walkways along the warehouse perimeter. Hatched exclusion zones separating foot traffic from forklift lanes. Zebra crossings at designated points with stop lines for forklifts. Within a month, workers naturally followed the marked paths and near-misses stopped.\n\nWe made a crossing placement error at a distribution centre in Truganina in 2018. We marked pedestrian crossings at the locations management suggested, but they weren't where workers actually needed to cross. People ignored the crossings and walked elsewhere. We had to add additional crossings at actual desire lines at our cost, around $2,200.

Frequently Asked Questions

White is the standard colour for pedestrian walkways in Australian workplaces. This contrasts with yellow used for forklift and vehicle lanes, making zones immediately distinguishable.

We observe actual pedestrian movement patterns, not just where management thinks crossings should go. Crossings at natural desire lines get used; crossings in inconvenient locations get ignored.

Hatched zones between pedestrian paths and vehicle lanes where neither should travel. This buffer space provides reaction time if someone strays and prevents gradual encroachment.

Yes, effective crossings include stop lines requiring forklifts and vehicles to give way. Without stop lines, vehicles may not yield and crossings become ineffective.

Yes, carpark pedestrian paths connecting parking areas to building entries are covered by AS/NZS 2890.1. We mark safe routes through vehicle areas.

Minimum 1.0m for single-direction traffic, 1.8m or wider for two-way pedestrian flow. Width depends on pedestrian volumes and whether people need to pass each other.
