Line Removal That Actually Eliminates Ghosting

Changing your carpark layout? Old lines showing through new paint? Ghosting creates confusion and looks unprofessional. We use high-pressure water blasting and mechanical grinding to remove old markings completely, leaving a clean surface for fresh marking. Proper removal is the difference between professional results and a mess that shows through for years.

Why Proper Removal Matters More Than You Think?

A shopping centre in Cheltenham learned this lesson the expensive way. They'd changed their carpark layout and had a contractor paint over the old lines with black paint before applying new white lines. Six months later, sun exposure had faded the black cover paint and the old layout was showing through everywhere. Drivers were following ghost lines to the old layout. Complete confusion.

They called us to fix it. We had to remove everything, old lines and new, and start fresh. That job cost three times what proper removal would have cost initially.

Here's the thing about covering old lines: it never works long-term. Paint fades at different rates. The darker cover paint will fade faster than white lines underneath. Within 12-18 months, you'll see ghosts of the old layout. The only real solution is removal.

We use two main removal methods. Water blasting at 3500-4000 PSI strips paint without damaging good asphalt surfaces. It's our preferred method for most carparks. Mechanical grinding is used for thicker coatings, thermoplastic, and areas where water containment is difficult.

Frequently Asked Questions

You can, but we don't recommend it for layout changes. Black paint over white lines will fade at different rates, and within 12-18 months you'll see ghosting of the old layout. For simple remarking over existing lines in the same position, painting over is fine.

Water blasting uses high-pressure water (3500-4000 PSI) to strip paint without damaging the underlying surface. Grinding physically removes the top layer of surface along with the paint. It's needed for thicker coatings, thermoplastic, or where water containment isn't practical.

Time depends on area, coating type, and method. Water blasting typically removes 50-100 linear metres per hour for standard paint. Thermoplastic takes longer. Grinding is slower but more thorough.

Water blasting at correct pressure removes paint without damaging good-quality asphalt or concrete. Grinding does remove a thin layer of surface material but creates a slightly textured finish that actually improves paint adhesion.

We capture all waste water using containment systems and vacuum recovery. The contaminated water is transported to licensed waste facilities for treatment. No discharge to stormwater drains.

Yes, thermoplastic usually requires mechanical grinding rather than water blasting due to its thickness and adhesion. Grinding removes the thermoplastic along with a thin layer of surface. The area is then ready for new markings.
