AFL Laws of the Game Boundary
AFL Laws specify oval dimensions between 135m-185m length and 110m-155m width, forming a true ellipse. Boundary lines must be clearly visible and consistently wide around the entire perimeter.
Goal Square Specifications
AFL Laws require goal squares of 9m x 9m measured from the inside of the goal posts. Lines must be straight, corners must be true right angles, and the square must be precisely centred between the posts.
Centre Circle Requirements
AFL Laws specify a centre circle of 3m radius with an outer circle of 10m radius for ruck contests. The centre of both circles must align exactly with the centre of the oval.
50 Metre Arc Marking
AFL Laws require 50m arcs centred on the middle of each goal line (not the goal posts). The arc must be a true geometric arc visible from all parts of the ground for umpire positioning.
Interchange and Bench Areas
AFL and VFL specifications define interchange gate positions, bench areas, and coaches' box dimensions. These must be marked consistently on both sides of the ground for competition venues.
Cricket Overlay Requirements
Where AFL ovals share with cricket, pitch position and protected areas must be considered. Boundary lines may need adjustment to accommodate pitch squares while maintaining minimum AFL dimensions.

Frequently Asked Questions
We calculate the mathematical ellipse using the required length and width, then plot coordinate points around the perimeter. These points are marked on the ground with survey accuracy, then connected with curved lines. This produces a geometrically accurate oval, not an approximation.
Yes, AFL Laws allow ovals between 135m-185m length and 110m-155m width. We can mark to your specific requirements whether that's maximum dimensions for senior football or reduced sizes for junior competitions and training.
Cricket pitches sit within the AFL playing surface, and we mark around them. The pitch position affects where the boundary can go. We'll assess your ground and ensure both codes can play without the markings conflicting.
A complete AFL oval remark including boundary, goal squares, centre circles, and 50m arcs takes 6 to 10 hours depending on size. We can work overnight if you need the ground ready for morning training or weekend matches.
Yes, we mark interchange gates, bench areas, coaches' boxes, and runner entry points for competition venues. These have specific dimensional requirements under AFL/VFL regulations that we follow precisely.
For grounds with regular weekend matches and training use, boundary lines typically need monthly touch-ups. Full remarking including all features is usually needed 3 to 4 times per season. We offer maintenance packages for councils and clubs.
