How Marked Pallet Positions Turn Warehouse Chaos into Organised Systems?

A warehouse in Laverton North called us about their floor storage chaos. Pallets were placed randomly wherever there was space. Forklift drivers couldn't find stock, pallets blocked aisles, and inventory counts were nightmares because nothing was in consistent locations. They needed a floor storage system. We marked a grid of pallet positions across their floor storage area. Each position got a unique location code matching their warehouse management system. Staging areas for inbound and outbound goods were clearly designated. Aisle clearances were maintained by the bay boundaries. The warehouse manager reported inventory accuracy improved dramatically. We made a grid alignment error at a distribution centre in Somerton in 2016. We started marking from one corner without checking the building wasn't square. By the time we reached the far end, the grid was visibly skewed. We had to remove and remark the entire floor at our cost, around $7,800. Now we always survey and string-line before marking grids.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bay size depends on your pallet dimensions and handling method. Standard Australian pallets are 1165x1165mm, so bays are typically 1300-1400mm to allow forklift clearance. We design bays for your actual pallet sizes.

We mark location codes that match your WMS location hierarchy. Whether that's zone-aisle-bay format or a custom system, we ensure physical marking matches your digital locations.

Yes, colour coding is common for distinguishing zones. For example, yellow for general storage, blue for cold chain staging, green for dispatch ready. We'll design a colour scheme that works for your operations.

We survey the floor area, establish reference lines, and string-line the entire grid before marking. This ensures straight, consistent alignment even in buildings that aren't perfectly square.

Yes, staging areas for receiving, dispatch, cross-docking, and quality hold are all part of a complete floor marking system. Clear staging zones prevent goods getting mixed or lost.

In typical warehouse conditions with regular forklift traffic, floor marking lasts 18-24 months. High-traffic areas may need earlier touch-ups. We can set up maintenance schedules.
