Proper Warehouse Markings Are a WHS Requirement, Not a Nice-to-Have
Quick answer: Line Marking Australia marks warehouses across Australia, including forklift lanes, pedestrian walkways, pallet bays, loading docks and hazard zones. We match the material to the traffic and use two-pack epoxy where forklifts run all day. Most work is done at night, on weekends or between shifts, so your operation keeps running.
Recent warehouse jobs
- Gaythorne, QLD (October 2026): a new warehouse marked before move-in, with a container loading zone, forklift operating zones, walkways and A to K lane markings. See the Gaythorne job.
- Warana, QLD (October 2026): the factory floor was shot-blasted and ground, then marked with operator and office walkways, 4 pedestrian crossings, a work zone and 26 car bays outside. See the Warana job.
- Richlands, QLD (September 2026): keep-clear zones at 7 fire exits, walkways, two loading-dock chevron areas and 13 car bays. See the Richlands job.
- Preston, VIC (September 2026): forklift lanes and work zones marked around a working warehouse.
Marked overnight before a safety audit
A warehouse manager in Campbellfield called us at 7pm on a Friday after their safety audit was brought forward to Tuesday. The forklift lanes and pedestrian walkways had faded badly. We assessed the site Saturday morning, quoted by lunch and marked the floor Sunday night: 2,400 linear metres of safety markings in one eight-hour shift. The audit passed with zero non-conformances.
Why the material matters
Warehouse floors are hard on paint. Road-marking paint under constant forklift traffic can wear away within months, which is why we use two-pack epoxy or MMA in forklift lanes and turning areas, and lighter coatings where traffic is light. Matching the material to the traffic is what makes markings last.
Warehouse safety rules
The Model WHS Regulations require businesses to manage the risk of forklifts and people sharing space, and clear floor marking is one of the main controls. Safe Work Australia’s General guide for industrial lift trucks covers traffic management. Signs follow AS 1319. See our forklift lane marking, warehouse walkway marking, pallet bay marking and warehouses and factories pages.

Compliance Standards
Forklift & Pedestrian Separation Zones
WHS Regulations (model WHS Regulations 2011; OHS Regulations 2017 in Victoria). Work health and safety laws require you to separate people from mobile plant such as forklifts. Lane and walkway widths are set from your widest forklift and load, plus safe clearances, in your site traffic management plan.
Slip Resistance for Walkway Surfaces
AS 4586:2013, Slip resistance classification for pedestrian surfaces. AS 4586 rates how slip resistant a surface is, but it does not set a minimum. We pick marking products to suit wet or dry walkways, using the SA HB 198 guide.
Industrial Safety Colour Coding
AS 1318:1985, SAA Industrial Safety Colour Code. Yellow for caution/traffic lanes, red for fire/danger/stop, green for safety/first aid, blue for mandatory actions. Universal recognition across all industrial sites.
Loading Dock & Delivery Zone Marking
AS 2890.2:2018, Off-street commercial vehicle facilities. Covers service vehicle access, loading docks and keeping trucks apart from other vehicles in logistics areas.
Hazardous Materials Storage Zones
AS 3780:2023, Storage and handling of corrosive substances. Bunded areas, chemical storage zones, and spill containment areas require specific floor marking with appropriate colours and symbols.
Emergency Equipment & Exit Marking
AS 2444, Building Code of Australia, Fire equipment locations, emergency exits, and assembly areas must have clear floor marking. Keep-clear zones around fire extinguishers, hydrants, and electrical panels with high-visibility marking.

AS 1318
Safety Colour Code
Sets the safety colours for hazards, walkways and equipment zones, so markings mean the same thing on every site.
AS 1319
Safety Signs
Covers the design and use of safety signs and symbols, including floor-marked legends and pedestrian symbols.
WHS Regulations
Workplace Traffic
Separating forklifts from pedestrians is a duty under the model WHS Regulations; marked lanes and exclusion zones are how most sites do it.
AS 4586
Slip Resistance
Defines slip resistance classifications (P rating) for pedestrian surfaces. Critical for wet areas, ramps, and high-traffic zones.

Frequently Asked Questions
There is no single number in the law. Lane width depends on your widest forklift and load, whether traffic is one-way or two-way, and the clearance you need on each side. Many sites end up with lanes of about 3.5 to 4 metres and walkways of at least 1 metre. Your traffic management plan should set the final widths. We measure your equipment and loads during site assessment to specify correct widths.
Standard acrylic floor paint is walkable in 2-4 hours, light traffic in 24 hours, full forklift traffic in 72 hours. Two-pack epoxy cures faster: walkable in 6-8 hours, full traffic in 24-48 hours depending on temperature. We plan around your operational schedule to minimize disruption.
Sometimes. If existing markings are well-adhered and you're not changing layout, we can paint over after thorough cleaning. If there's peeling, oil contamination, or layout changes, we recommend removal first. Painting over failing markings just means the new layer fails too. We assess during site visit and advise honestly.
Two-pack epoxy is a chemical-cure coating that bonds to concrete at molecular level. It's harder, more abrasion-resistant, and handles forklift traffic far better than acrylic paints. It costs more and requires proper mixing, but in high-traffic areas it lasts 3-5 times longer.
Yes, we work around operational warehouses all the time. We can mark in sections while other areas remain operational, work around fixed racking, and accommodate equipment that can't be moved. Our crews are experienced in working safely in active warehouse environments.
AS 1318 sets the safety colours: yellow for caution, red for fire equipment and danger, green for safety equipment and first aid, and blue for mandatory actions. AS 1318 does not set a colour for walkways, but white is the usual choice. Most warehouses use yellow forklift lanes with white pedestrian paths.
