What is Wheel Stop Installation?
Line Marking Australia supplies and installs wheel stops in car parks across Australia. Under AS/NZS 2890.1:2004, a wheel stop sits about 0.6 m from the end of the bay for front-in parking and about 0.9 m for reverse-in parking, and should be no more than about 100 mm high. We fix rubber, concrete and recycled plastic stops.
Cars that roll too far forward cause real headaches. Bumpers hit walls and shopfronts. Overhangs block footpaths. Garden beds get flattened and fences get bent.
A wheel stop gives drivers a clear, gentle cue to stop. We set them out to suit your bays, fix them properly and repaint the lines at the same time if you need.
Where wheel stops belong
- Bays that face a footpath, so overhanging cars don't narrow the walkway.
- Bays in front of walls, glass, fences and garden beds.
- Bays near EV chargers, meters, columns and services.
- Bays on a slope, where drivers can misjudge the end of the bay.
Not every bay needs one. In an open car park with plenty of room ahead, a painted bay line may be enough. We'll tell you where stops actually help.
Wheel stop position and height under AS/NZS 2890.1
AS/NZS 2890.1:2004 is the current off-street parking standard. It places wheel stops so a car's overhang stays inside the space planned for it.
- Front-in parking: about 0.6 m from the end of the bay.
- Reverse-in parking: about 0.9 m from the end of the bay.
- Height: no more than about 100 mm, so it stops a tyre without catching low bumpers.
Bays where drivers park both ways need some thought. We look at how people really use your car park and set the stops to match.
Wheel stops also need a clear walking route around them. Placed badly, they become a trip hazard. Yellow or high-contrast stops help people see them.
Rubber, concrete or recycled plastic wheel stops
Rubber
Rubber is the most common choice. It's light, has a little give and is kind to tyres. Many rubber stops come with yellow reflective strips built in.
Concrete
Concrete stops are heavy and long-lasting. They suit trucks and areas where vandalism is a problem. They can chip at the edges and are harder to move later.
Recycled plastic
Recycled plastic stops are light and handle the weather well. They're a good fit if you want a lower-impact product. Check the colour and markings suit your site.
Fixing wheel stops into asphalt or concrete
The fixing matters as much as the stop. A loose stop that shifts is worse than none.
- Concrete: we drill and fix with anchors suited to the slab, often with adhesive for extra hold.
- Asphalt: we use long pins driven deep into the pavement, sometimes with adhesive. Thin or soft asphalt may need a different approach.
We check for buried services before we drill. In multi-storey car parks, suspended slabs are often post-tensioned, so we check the drawings or have the slab scanned first.
How a wheel stop job works
- Send us the details. Photos, a site plan or a bay count gets us started.
- Set out. We mark each stop's position from the end of the bay and line up the whole row.
- Fix. We drill, anchor and check every stop is tight and level.
- Mark. If your bay lines are faded, we can repaint them on the same visit.
For the detail behind the numbers, read our guides to wheel stop placement and size and standard car park bay sizes. Need the whole car park done? See our car park line marking.
Common wheel stop problems we fix
- Stops that have shifted or spun because the pins worked loose.
- Cracked or broken stops with sharp edges or exposed spikes.
- Stops set at the wrong distance, so bumpers still hit the wall.
- Stops placed across walking routes that people trip over.
We take out damaged stops, fill old fixing holes where needed and reset new stops in the right place.

Compliance Standards
AS/NZS 2890.1:2004
The current off-street parking standard. Wheel stops sit about 0.6 m from the end of the bay for front-in parking and about 0.9 m for reverse-in, and no more than about 100 mm high.
AS/NZS 2890.6:2009
Accessible bays and their shared areas must stay clear and usable. We place wheel stops so they never block the shared area or the accessible path.
Model WHS Laws
Car park owners and managers must control trip hazards. High-contrast stops, placed clear of walking routes, help keep people safe. In Victoria, the OHS Act 2004 applies.

Frequently Asked Questions
Under AS/NZS 2890.1:2004, about 0.6 m from the end of the bay for front-in parking and about 0.9 m for reverse-in parking. Line Marking Australia measures each stop from the end of the bay so overhangs stay clear of walls and paths.
AS/NZS 2890.1:2004 keeps wheel stops to no more than about 100 mm high. That is enough to stop a tyre without catching low bumpers. We supply stops that sit within this height.
Rubber stops are light, kind to tyres and easy to replace, so they suit most car parks. Concrete stops are heavier and long-lasting, better for trucks or vandal-prone sites, but they can chip. Recycled plastic is a light, weather-resistant middle option.
Yes. On asphalt we fix wheel stops with long pins driven deep into the pavement, sometimes with adhesive. Very thin or soft asphalt may need a different fixing, so we check the pavement first.
No. Wheel stops help where a car could overhang a footpath, wall, glass, garden bed or services. In open car parks with room ahead, a painted bay line may be enough. We advise bay by bay.
Yes, with care. Suspended slabs are often post-tensioned, so we check the drawings or have the slab scanned before drilling. Where drilling is not suitable, a glue-down fixing may be an option.
Price depends on how many stops you need, the material, the surface they are fixed into, whether bay lines are included and site access. Send a bay count or photos through our quote form for a price.
