University Campus Carparks Have Higher Accessible Bay Ratios and Wayfinding Requirements Than Standard Commercial
La Trobe University Bundoora campus has one of the largest carparks in Melbourne's outer north — multiple surface carparks and a multi-storey structure serving a student, staff, and visitor population that includes a higher proportion of mobility-impaired users than a typical commercial carpark. University carparks are subject to both AS/NZS 2890.6 and the university's own accessibility policy.
La Trobe's accessibility policy at the time required a minimum 5% of total bays as accessible — above the AS/NZS 2890.6 statutory minimum. Their wayfinding requirements included directional arrows to accessible bay zones from all carpark entries, not just IS symbols at the bay. These requirements weren't in our initial brief from the facilities contractor, who had referenced only the AS/NZS standard.
We caught the policy requirement during our pre-marking review when the facilities manager forwarded the campus accessibility policy document. The additional accessible bays and directional arrows were added to scope before any marking started. A missed requirement in a university accessibility audit is a serious reputational issue.
Bundoora is home to La Trobe University, RMIT Bundoora campus, and the research and industrial businesses along Plenty Road and Grimshaw Street. VicRoads approved.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Bundoora La Trobe University, RMIT Bundoora, and Plenty Road commercial and research facility carparks are part of our northern Melbourne schedule. We review university and institutional accessibility policies before confirming scope on campus carparks — these often exceed AS/NZS 2890.6 minimums. Bundoora is on our regular run with Mill Park, Reservoir, Preston, and Epping. Fixed pricing, completion documentation, VicRoads approved.
AS/NZS 2890.6 specifies a minimum ratio based on total bay count — typically 1 accessible bay per 50 standard bays for the first 1,000 bays. However, universities, hospitals, and government facilities often have internal accessibility policies requiring higher ratios. La Trobe University's policy requires 5% accessible bays across its Bundoora campus. We always ask for the applicable policy document before confirming accessible bay counts.
Directional arrows are pavement markings that guide drivers from carpark entries toward the accessible bay zones, used in large carparks where accessible bays aren't immediately visible from every entry. They're not mandated by AS/NZS 2890.6 but are required by some universities, hospitals, and councils as part of their accessibility policy. For a La Trobe Bundoora campus carpark, the university's own policy governs, not just the standard.
Yes. Multi-level and surface carpark marking at Bundoora is scheduled around university operational hours — typically semester break periods, weekend sessions, or overnight windows for occupied structures. We stage by level or carpark section to maintain access throughout. For urgent accessibility compliance jobs during semester, we can work in sections with traffic management maintaining partial access during marking. We schedule around your operational hours because downtime costs more than the marking job. Most Bundoora facilities run Sunday nights or after-hours weekday windows. We provide a detailed session plan before arrival, work in sections to maintain partial access, and have the area clear before your first shift starts.
