Pump-Placed Concrete With Excess Water Has Higher Porosity — Primer Absorbs Rapidly and Films Too Thin
A new Doreen community centre carpark concrete had been placed by pump. The slab appeared standard and the contractor confirmed normal 28-day strength. When we applied primer, absorption was extremely high across sections of the floor — it soaked in almost instantly, leaving a thin, dry-looking film rather than the normal wet sheen.
High primer absorption indicates high concrete porosity. Pump-placed concrete is particularly susceptible to excess water addition — pump operators sometimes add water at the pump end to improve flow and prevent blockages. This increases the effective water-to-cement ratio beyond the designed mix, producing concrete with higher porosity and lower surface strength than specified.
The strength test at 28 days may still pass because core concrete achieves design strength. The surface layer is the weakest part. For high-absorption concrete, a two-coat primer approach resolves it: a thin initial seal coat at reduced dilution to penetrate and seal the surface pores, followed by a full-strength second coat once the surface seal has dried.
Doreen is the Yan Yean Road growth corridor community and commercial hub in Melbourne's outer north. VicRoads approved. Primer absorption tested on every Doreen new concrete floor identified as pump-placed before product is committed to the full area.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Doreen Yan Yean Road community and town centre carparks are part of our Whittlesea schedule. We assess primer absorption on all pump-placed concrete floors before committing product to the full area. Doreen is part of our regular outer-north Melbourne run covering South Morang, Mernda, Mill Park, and Bundoora. Same-day assessment for WorkSafe Victoria improvement notices. Fixed pricing, completion documentation, VicRoads approved.
Ask the concrete contractor for the pour records — pump-placed concrete is documented in the delivery dockets. Visually, high water-ratio concrete can appear slightly dustier with a rougher surface texture. The most reliable indicator is our primer absorption test on the day of our site visit. We apply a small test patch of primer and observe the absorption rate before committing to the full floor application. This takes 15 minutes and can prevent a failed marking job.
The first coat is applied at a reduced spread rate with a slightly diluted primer formulation. This penetrates the high-porosity surface without flooding the pores and seals the capillary network. Once it dries (typically 30-60 minutes), the second coat is applied at normal spread rate and builds a uniform film on the sealed surface. Pull-off testing after both coats confirms adequate adhesion before marking proceeds. The system adds approximately 90 minutes to the session but prevents the marking lifting in high-wear zones.
Surface porosity is higher but structural capacity may still meet the design specification — compressive strength at 28 days often passes even with modest excess water addition. The concern for marking purposes is adhesion quality, which two-coat primer resolves. Long-term, higher-porosity concrete is more susceptible to water penetration and freeze-thaw damage, though Doreen's climate makes freeze-thaw less of a factor than in alpine areas.
