Accessible Bays Should Be Closest to the Services That Mobility-Limited Patients Actually Use

We marked a Berwick medical centre carpark with accessible bays adjacent to the main building entry — standard practice per AS/NZS 2890.6 which requires accessible spaces to be on the shortest accessible path to the building entrance. The medical centre's practice manager reviewed the completed carpark and raised a practical issue.

The main building entry served the GP consulting rooms. The physiotherapy and rehabilitation rooms — which treated the majority of patients with genuine mobility limitations — were accessed from the rear of the building, approximately 60 metres from the main entry. Elderly and mobility-limited physio patients were parking in the accessible bays at the front and then walking 60 metres around the building to the rear entry.

AS/NZS 2890.6 specifies the number and dimensions of accessible bays. It also requires that accessible bays be located on the shortest accessible path to the building entrance. For a medical centre with multiple entries serving different clinical areas, 'the building entrance' needs to be interpreted as the entrance most used by people requiring accessible parking — which for this facility was the rear physio entry, not the main entry.

Berwick is Casey City's established commercial and medical hub — Clyde Road, Princes Highway, and the community health and commercial facilities. VicRoads approved. Accessible bay position confirmed against actual patient flow and clinical area access — not just proximity to the main building entry — on every Berwick medical facility carpark.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Berwick Clyde Road medical and commercial carparks are part of our Casey City schedule. Accessible bay position confirmed against patient flow and clinical area access before proposing placement. We've completed 5,000+ projects nationally since 2009 and carry $20M public liability insurance. Every Berwick quote includes a site assessment, surface condition report, and fixed pricing. No estimates that change at invoicing. For WorkSafe Victoria improvement notices we can typically assess within 24 hours and deploy within 48-72 hours. Completion comes with photo documentation, a compliance statement, and material specifications. VicRoads approved for any road or carpark marking that requires local council or state road authority sign-off.

AS/NZS 2890.6 requires that accessible spaces be located as close as practicable to the main entrance or principal access point of the facility, on a level path of travel. For a medical centre with multiple functional entries, the principal access point for mobility-limited users is the one closest to the clinical services they access most. This requires a clinical layout discussion, not just a drawing review.

Yes — and we now do this routinely for medical facilities. A 10-minute discussion with the practice manager about which entry patients with mobility limitations typically use, and which clinical areas they access, determines the optimal accessible bay position. This conversation prevents a remark and, more importantly, ensures the accessible bays actually serve the patients who need them. Line Marking Australia has been completing marking across Berwick and surrounds since 2009, with 5,000+ projects nationally. We carry $20M public liability and $10M professional indemnity insurance, VicRoads approved. Every job comes with fixed pricing, photo completion documentation, compliance certification, and material specifications. Yes — and for a medical centre serving patients with mobility limitations at multiple entries, having accessible bays at both entries is the correct approach. AS/NZS 2890.6 specifies minimum numbers based on total car spaces — distributing accessible bays to serve multiple entries may require additional bays above the minimum. AS/NZS 2890.6 requirements are assessed as part of every carpark quote in Berwick, not as an add-on. We check bay dimensions, IS symbol currency, shared zone hatching, gradient, and path of travel. The completed documentation includes dimensional verification so your facility manager has a compliance record for council or DDA audit purposes. $20M public liability insurance is in place for all accessibility-related marking work.

VicRoads approved since 2009. Approval means we meet the contractor qualification, insurance, and technical standards required to work on state roads and local government road networks. We carry $20M public liability and $10M professional indemnity coverage, which your risk manager or procurement team can request in writing. All road marking work in Berwick is done to AS 1742.3 traffic control standards with retroreflective thermoplastic to AS/NZS 1906.3. Traffic management plans are provided before every job. You receive as-built completion photos, a compliance statement, and material certification on completion. We also cover Officer, Narre Warren, Hallam on the same schedule.
