A Carrum Downs plastics manufacturer asked us to remark their warehouse floor. We completed forklift lanes, pedestrian walkways, hazard hatching, and dock zones. Looked thorough on completion. WorkSafe Victoria attended a routine inspection two weeks later and issued an improvement notice: three fire hose reel bays had no exclusion zone markings around them. Under WorkSafe Victoria's guidelines, fire equipment access zones require clear floor marking to keep them unobstructed at all times.

We'd walked the floor during assessment but hadn't systematically checked every fire equipment location. The three unnoticed hose reel bays were in sections partially obscured by racking during the walk. We went back, marked the exclusion zones around all fire equipment — hose reels, extinguishers, and the fire panel approach — at no cost to the client. WorkSafe accepted the updated documentation and closed the notice.

The fix to our process was straightforward: fire equipment location mapping is now a mandatory separate step in every warehouse assessment, independent of the general floor marking scope. Before the job starts we walk specifically looking for fire hose reels, extinguishers, hydrant boosters, and fire panel access paths and list every one in the quote. If it's fire equipment, it gets an exclusion zone. No exceptions.
