A Pedestrian Crosswalk That Creates a Pinch Point Is Worse Than No Crosswalk

A Hallam logistics business had us mark their internal warehouse including a pedestrian crosswalk from the amenities block to the production floor. We positioned the crosswalk at the most direct route — straight across the corner of the loading dock approach. Logical route. Wrong position. WorkSafe Victoria's follow-up inspection flagged it: the crosswalk created a pinch point between pedestrians and reversing vehicles at the dock corner. The direct route put people directly in the reversing blind spot of B-doubles entering the dock.

We removed the crosswalk markings and repositioned it 12 metres further from the dock corner where a clear sightline existed in both directions. Same destination, safer path. The client wasn't billed for the rework — we should have assessed the sight lines at the proposed crosswalk position during the initial layout review. That's now a standard step: every internal pedestrian crosswalk position is assessed for vehicle sightlines and reversing blind spots before the layout drawing is finalised.

Hallam sits at the Monash Freeway's south-eastern gateway — Hallam Road, Belgrave-Hallam Road, and the industrial precincts running south toward Narre Warren and Berwick. Logistics, manufacturing, building materials, and trade businesses. The mix of large reversing vehicle operations and internal pedestrian traffic is common here, which makes traffic management plan quality critical.

VicRoads approved. We've been marking Hallam's industrial corridor since 2009. Pedestrian crosswalk sightline assessment is now a standard pre-finalisation step on every warehouse layout drawing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Hallam logistics and manufacturing facilities are part of our regular south-east Melbourne Monash corridor schedule. Pedestrian crosswalk sightline assessment included in every warehouse layout drawing — reversing vehicle blind spots checked before crosswalk positions are finalised.

The crosswalk is positioned where pedestrians and reversing vehicles share a zone without adequate sightlines. WorkSafe's concern is that a person using the crosswalk is in the reversing blind spot of dock or yard vehicles. The fix is relocating the crosswalk to a position with clear sightlines for both drivers and pedestrians — typically away from dock corners and reversing zones.

We provide a layout drawing that shows all markings — pedestrian walkways, forklift lanes, crosswalk positions, hazard zones, and loading dock demarcation. The drawing includes sightline notes on crosswalk positions and is provided for client review and sign-off before marking begins. For facilities that require a full formal WHS Traffic Management Plan as a separate document, we can assist with that scope — ask at quote stage.

Yes. Single assessment across all buildings, unified convention, staged completion schedule by building. Multiple buildings with different previous contractors often have inconsistent conventions — we assess and unify as part of the scope.

Yes. VicRoads approved. Casey City Council road specifications for local Hallam roads. Traffic management to AS 1742.3. Thermoplastic with retroreflective glass beads for all external road and carpark surfaces.
