Loading Dock Adjacent Aisles Need to Accommodate the Swept Path of Your Delivery Vehicles — Not Just AS/NZS Minimum
A new Officer commercial precinct carpark had aisle widths set at the AS/NZS 2890.1 minimum for 90-degree bays — 6.2m throughout. Compliant in every respect. In the first week of trading, a Woolworths semi-trailer making its first delivery found that the carpark aisle adjacent to the loading dock approach required a swept path of approximately 7.5m to complete the dock approach manoeuvre — significantly wider than the AS/NZS minimum.
The truck couldn't complete the turn without mounting the marked kerb line. The centre manager called us. We explained that AS/NZS 2890.1 specifies passenger vehicle and light commercial vehicle aisle dimensions — not semi-trailer swept paths for loading dock approaches. The loading dock adjacent aisle should have been sized to the delivery vehicle's swept path requirements.
The fix was to remove the bay line closest to the loading dock approach on the aisle and remark the aisle at 7.5m — losing one bay in that row. The developer's traffic engineer should have specified the loading dock adjacent aisle width based on the delivery vehicle type during the design phase. We now ask specifically about delivery vehicle types for any aisle adjacent to a loading dock before we quote the aisle width.
Officer is the Princes Highway commercial and industrial corridor at the southern end of the Casey-Cardinia growth frontier. VicRoads approved. Delivery vehicle swept path confirmation for loading dock adjacent aisles is standard on every Officer and Casey-Cardinia new commercial precinct quote.

AS/NZS 2890.1 is the standard for off-street parking facilities for passenger vehicles and light commercial vehicles. The minimum 6.2m aisle width for 90-degree bays is based on the turning circle of a standard passenger car or light van. Semi-trailers and rigid trucks have substantially larger swept paths — typically 7.5-12m depending on vehicle length and dock configuration. Line Marking Australia has been working to AS/NZS standards since 2009 and we carry $20M public liability insurance. Every job in Officer comes with a compliance statement specifying which standards apply, the materials used (including product data sheets), and photographic documentation of the completed work. This gives your facility manager, safety officer, or auditor a complete record without having to chase it.
The delivery vehicle's swept path is calculated using a swept path analysis software from the vehicle's turning radius specification. Your traffic engineer or the centre's civil designer should conduct this analysis using the largest expected delivery vehicle. If the delivery vehicle type is known (Woolworths semi, Toll B-double, etc.), the swept path specification is available from the carrier. Yes. Transition aisles adjacent to loading docks are commonly wider than standard carpark aisles — the difference is accommodated by reducing the bay count in the dock-adjacent row rather than extending into adjacent bays. We mark the wider aisle with clear transition marking to the standard-width aisles.
