Line Marking Caloundra West QLD

A Caloundra West industrial estate had tilt-panel concrete construction with the panel faces exposed at the carpark perimeter — the carpark bays ran right up to the base of the tilt panels. We were marking the bays adjacent to the tilt panels and applied thermoplastic with our standard spray-assist application. Overspray drifted and bonded to the tilt-panel concrete face approximately 200mm above the bay line.

Thermoplastic bonds to concrete surfaces even at low overspray thickness — the hot material adheres on contact. Unlike paint overspray which can sometimes be washed off, thermoplastic overspray on concrete requires grinding or heat-removal to remove. The building's property manager was understandably unhappy.

We used a heat gun and scraper to remove the majority of the overspray — time-consuming and not perfectly clean. The lesson: any marking adjacent to exposed concrete walls requires either a masking strip applied to the wall base before marking, or a switch to hand-applied or low-overspray application in the final bay adjacent to the wall. Paper masking tape applied to the wall face at application height, removed immediately after marking, prevents overspray bonding completely.
