Cold Air Pools in Low-Lying Carpark Sections Overnight — Check the Low Point Temperature, Not Just the Ambient
A Stuart logistics facility external carpark had a natural low point in the southern section — a depression of approximately 400mm below the surrounding carpark level, designed for stormwater collection. Overnight cold air pooled in this low point; cold air is denser than warm air and drains to the lowest available point under still conditions.
We measured ambient temperature at the carpark perimeter — 14°C. Surface temperature at the perimeter — 13°C. Fine. The low point section was a different story: surface temperature was 9°C, 5°C colder than the surrounding areas. We marked the full carpark including the low point without measuring the low point temperature specifically.
Glass bead embedment in the low point section was marginal. The thermoplastic had cooled faster in the cold air pool, cutting the embedment window short. The beads didn't achieve sufficient embedment depth and abraded off within six weeks of the marked section opening to traffic.
In North Queensland and tropical regions, the expectation is that cool nights aren't problematic for marking. But cold air pooling is a topographic phenomenon independent of climate — a 400mm depression in a carpark creates a micro-climate up to 5°C colder than the surrounding area on still nights. Infrared thermometer check at the lowest point of any carpark with topographic variation before marking the first line. TMR approved.

No estimates that change at invoicing. For Workplace Health and Safety QLD improvement notices we can typically assess within 24 hours and deploy within 48-72 hours. Cold air is denser than warm air and flows downhill under still, clear-sky conditions — the same mechanism as ground frost formation in frost hollows. On still nights with no wind to mix the air layers, cold air drains from the surrounding higher ground into the carpark depression and forms a cold pool. The pool can be 3-8°C colder than the surrounding area depending on the depression depth and drainage area.
Less frequently than in southern Australia — NQ's minimum temperatures rarely approach freezing. But cold air pooling can still reduce surface temperature below the thermoplastic application threshold in the low-lying zone while the rest of the carpark is well above it. At 9°C versus 14°C, the difference is meaningful for glass bead embedment quality. Line Marking Australia has been completing marking across Stuart and surrounds since 2009, with 5,000+ projects nationally. We carry $20M public liability and $10M professional indemnity insurance, TMR approved. The topographic depression doesn't change — it's a permanent site feature. The check process is permanent too: always measure the lowest point surface temperature separately before marking. If the low point is below threshold while the rest is fine, mark the surrounding areas first and let the low point warm up as the session progresses and direct sun reaches it.
TMR Queensland approved since 2009. Approval means we meet the contractor qualification, insurance, and technical standards required to work on state roads and local government road networks. We carry $20M public liability and $10M professional indemnity coverage, which your risk manager or procurement team can request in writing.
