Polymer Fibre-Reinforced Concrete Needs High-Build Primer to Encapsulate Surface Fibres

A new Narangba industrial warehouse had a concrete floor with polymer fibre reinforcement — fine polypropylene fibres throughout the mix to control cracking and improve impact resistance. After diamond grinding, the fibres that were cut or exposed at the surface level created a slightly fuzzy texture across the floor. Our standard penetrating primer applied over this surface was absorbed unevenly — the areas with exposed fibres had different absorption characteristics to the areas between fibre clusters.

The primer coat looked inconsistent and the topcoat marking film had variable sheen. Adequate adhesion but not our standard finish quality. We applied a high-build epoxy primer as a second coat to encapsulate the surface fibres and create a uniform base before the marking topcoat. The high-build system fills around the fibre ends and levels the surface.

Polymer fibre-reinforced concrete is increasingly used in Queensland industrial warehouse slabs for its crack control properties — it's common in new Narangba and Moreton Bay north industrial construction. We now ask about concrete reinforcement type on every new construction floor quote in this precinct. Steel reinforcement mesh: standard primer approach. Polymer fibre reinforcement: high-build primer system specified.

Narangba is part of Moreton Bay's northern industrial corridor — chemicals, manufacturing, logistics, and the trade services that support the growing residential areas north of Brisbane. TMR approved. We've been completing Narangba industrial and warehouse marking since 2009.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Narangba Moreton Bay north industrial facilities and new construction warehouses are part of our northern Brisbane schedule. Concrete reinforcement type assessment on every new construction floor quote — polymer fibre reinforcement requires high-build primer to encapsulate surface fibres.

Polymer fibre-reinforced concrete has fine polypropylene or other polymer fibres distributed throughout the mix to control plastic shrinkage cracking and improve impact resistance. After diamond grinding, fibres cut at the surface create a slightly rough, fibrous texture. Standard penetrating primer absorbs unevenly across this texture. High-build epoxy primer fills around the exposed fibre ends and creates a uniform base for consistent topcoat adhesion and appearance.

Yes, after grinding. The surface texture has a slightly fuzzy or fibrous appearance under certain lighting conditions — you can see the cut fibre ends if you look closely. We also ask about the concrete mix specification at the assessment stage. Polymer fibre content is listed on the concrete delivery docket and in the structural specification.

High-build primer requires an additional application pass and a longer cure window — typically 24 hours between the high-build coat and the marking topcoat versus 4-6 hours for standard primer. We factor this into the schedule and quote. For PC deadline jobs, we build the additional day into the program.

Yes. Transport and Main Roads Queensland approved. Moreton Bay City Council road specifications for local Narangba roads. Traffic management to MUTCD Queensland. Thermoplastic for all external road and carpark surfaces.
