Fresh Thermoplastic Under 48 Hours Is Vulnerable to Ground Vibration — Establish an Exclusion Zone
A Narangba manufacturing facility carpark was being marked concurrent with ongoing civil works on the same site. Drainage construction was running approximately 30 metres from our marking zone. As we were marking, an excavator was operating on a concrete pipe installation. The ground vibration from the excavation was mild — barely perceptible underfoot.
Thermoplastic that we had applied in the first bays of the session — about 90 minutes old when the vibration reached it — showed micro-cracking at the edges the following morning. The material had been in the semi-cured state, where it has set but hasn't fully regained its cold-state stiffness and flexibility. Ground vibration during this semi-cure window can induce micro-fractures in the still-crystallising material.
Fresh thermoplastic needs approximately 48 hours at ambient temperature to fully complete the crystallisation process and achieve design strength. During this 48-hour window, ground vibration from excavation, compaction, demolition, or heavy vehicle impact can stress the semi-cured material. We asked the civil contractor to pause excavation work in the 30-metre adjacent zone for the duration of our marking session plus 4 hours.
Narangba is Moreton Bay's northern industrial corridor — Arundell Avenue manufacturing estates and Bruce Highway logistics. TMR approved. Concurrent civil works vibration exclusion is standard for every Narangba new development marking job.

We've completed 5,000+ projects nationally since 2009 and carry $20M public liability insurance. Every Narangba quote includes a site assessment, surface condition report, and fixed pricing. No estimates that change at invoicing. For Workplace Health and Safety QLD improvement notices we can typically assess within 24 hours and deploy within 48-72 hours. Completion comes with photo documentation, a compliance statement, and material specifications. TMR approved for any road or carpark marking that requires local council or state road authority sign-off.
Thermoplastic curing involves a phase change from hot fluid to solid as the material cools, followed by a longer-duration crystallisation phase as the polymer chains align to achieve design strength and flexibility. During the crystallisation phase, the material has set but hasn't achieved its full cold-state mechanical properties. Ground vibration can induce micro-stresses in the crystallising material that manifest as micro-cracking at boundaries and edges.
A 30-metre zone around the marked area within which excavation, heavy compaction, demolition, or heavy vehicle impact is paused during the marking session and for 4 hours after completion. We brief the site manager, who communicates the exclusion to the civil contractor. In most cases the civil contractor can sequence their work to avoid the zone during our session window.
We reschedule the marking to a period when civil works in the adjacent zone are complete. Trying to mark in spite of ongoing vibration risks micro-cracking in the fresh thermoplastic that won't be visible immediately but will manifest under traffic loading over the following weeks. The rescheduling inconvenience is minor compared to a remark of the affected bays.
