Thin Asphalt Over a Waterproofing Membrane Can Bubble When Thermoplastic Heat Transfers Through
A Salisbury commercial carpark had asphalt overlaid onto the original concrete base. In sections the overlay was 20-25mm thick. Between the original concrete and the overlay, a bitumen membrane waterproofing layer had been installed to prevent moisture ingress from below. We applied standard thermoplastic at 180°C. In the thin overlay sections, the heat transferred through the 20-25mm of asphalt and softened the bitumen membrane below — causing it to outgas and bubble. The bubbles lifted the thin asphalt above them.
We stopped within 15 minutes of seeing the first bubbles, assessed, and switched to cold-applied road marking paint for the remaining thin-overlay sections. The cold-applied sections produced no further bubbling. The already-thermoplastic-applied sections had minor surface irregularities where the asphalt had bubbled and resettled.
Thin asphalt over a waterproofing membrane is a specific substrate combination that thermoplastic application can disturb. The 50mm threshold that applies to cobble and paver bases applies here too — below 50mm overlay thickness over a heat-sensitive membrane, cold-applied product is the safer specification. We now measure overlay thickness with a probe on every Salisbury carpark with an asphalt overlay.
Salisbury is Brisbane's diverse southern industrial and commercial suburb — the Ipswich Road corridor and Beaudesert Road industrial businesses. TMR approved. Asphalt overlay thickness is assessed on every Salisbury carpark assessment.

Bitumen membrane waterproofing is used between a structural concrete base and an asphalt overlay in carparks where moisture from below is a concern — basement rooftop carparks, carparks over occupied spaces, or carparks on reactive soils.
