Concrete Poured in Winter Takes Longer Than 28 Days to Reach Design Strength
A new industrial estate floor in Smeaton Grange had been poured in mid-July. The concrete contractor confirmed a 28-day cure period — we scheduled marking for mid-August. What neither of us had accounted for adequately was the concrete cure temperature history: temperatures had stayed below 10°C for 10 consecutive days during the first two weeks of the cure period.
Concrete cures through a hydration reaction that slows significantly below 10°C and essentially stops below 5°C. A 28-day cure at consistent 20°C produces a specific compressive strength. A 28-day cure with 10 days below 10°C produces substantially less strength — the effective cure age in engineering terms may be only 18-20 days equivalent. The concrete was still actively carbonating at the surface in some areas when we marked it.
Primer adhesion was inconsistent — the carbonating zones had surface chemistry different from fully cured concrete and the primer didn't bond cleanly. We had to wait an additional three weeks and reprime the affected areas. The concrete contractor provided a compressive strength test result that confirmed the floor was below design strength at our marking date.
Winter pours in Camden and Sydney's south-west require a maturity-adjusted cure period rather than a calendar-day count. We now ask for concrete pour date, minimum temperature during the first 14 days of cure, and the contractor's compressive strength test result before marking any Smeaton Grange new construction floor poured between May and August. Transport NSW approved.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Smeaton Grange Camden industrial estates and new DCs are part of our south-west Sydney schedule. Winter pour cure maturity assessment on every new construction floor — compressive strength test result requested before marking for May-August pours. We've completed 5,000+ projects nationally since 2009 and carry $20M public liability insurance. Every Smeaton Grange quote includes a site assessment, surface condition report, and fixed pricing. No estimates that change at invoicing. For SafeWork NSW improvement notices we can typically assess within 24 hours and deploy within 48-72 hours. Completion comes with photo documentation, a compliance statement, and material specifications. Transport NSW approved for any road or carpark marking that requires local council or state road authority sign-off.
Concrete cures through hydration of cement particles — a chemical reaction that's temperature-sensitive. Below 10°C the reaction slows significantly; below 5°C it essentially stops. A concrete slab poured in July that spends 10 days below 10°C during its first fortnight gains far less strength than a summer pour of the same mix at the same calendar age. The 28-day rule assumes normal temperature conditions.
Maturity is the product of time and temperature during the cure period. Engineers use maturity calculations to estimate the equivalent cure age — a pour that experienced 10 days below 10°C may have effective maturity equivalent to only 18 days at normal temperature. The concrete contractor can calculate this from temperature logs and specify the additional time needed before the slab reaches design strength.
Yes. The concrete contractor should have retained test cylinders from the pour that can be tested at 28 days. If the compressive strength result meets design specification (typically 25 MPa or 32 MPa for industrial floors), we can proceed. If it's below specification, we wait for a retest at 35 or 42 days. We ask for the test result as part of our pre-marking confirmation.
Transport for NSW approved since 2009. Approval means we meet the contractor qualification, insurance, and technical standards required to work on state roads and local government road networks. We carry $20M public liability and $10M professional indemnity coverage, which your risk manager or procurement team can request in writing.
