Thermoplastic Run Straight Across Expansion Joints Cracks When the Joints Move Seasonally

A Granville warehouse had a concrete floor with expansion joints at approximately 6-metre intervals throughout. Standard construction. We marked safety lines running perpendicular to the expansion joints — the lines crossed the joints straight through. Within two months, the thermoplastic had cracked cleanly along every expansion joint crossing.

Expansion joints are designed to allow concrete slabs to move independently as temperature and moisture cause expansion and contraction. The movement is typically 1-3mm seasonally. Thermoplastic at standard film build has limited elasticity — a 1-3mm joint opening under a continuous film is enough to crack it. The cracks follow the joint exactly and the marking film separates cleanly.

The correct approach for lines crossing expansion joints is to either mark around the joint with a short break in the line at the joint position, or to use a flexible marking product specifically formulated to bridge joints — two-component polyurethane marking paint rated for joint movement. Standard thermoplastic is not suitable for bridging expansion joints. We returned and remarked using the break approach at every joint crossing in the affected lines.

Granville's older industrial building stock on the Parramatta Road corridor has expansion joints throughout — most floors were built in an era when large slab sections with frequent joints were standard practice. Expansion joint assessment is now a specific item on every Granville warehouse floor marking quote. VicRoads approved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Granville Parramatta Road industrial and Duck River corridor warehouses are part of our western Sydney schedule. Expansion joint assessment on every warehouse floor — lines crossing joints treated with break-in-line or flexible marking product. We've completed 5,000+ projects nationally since 2009 and carry $20M public liability insurance. Every Granville quote includes a site assessment, surface condition report, and fixed pricing. No estimates that change at invoicing. For SafeWork NSW improvement notices we can typically assess within 24 hours and deploy within 48-72 hours. Completion comes with photo documentation, a compliance statement, and material specifications. Transport NSW approved for any road or carpark marking that requires local council or state road authority sign-off.

Expansion joints allow adjacent concrete slabs to move independently by 1-3mm seasonally. Standard thermoplastic has limited flexibility — it's a semi-rigid material at floor temperatures. A joint opening 1-3mm under a continuous film is sufficient to fracture it cleanly. The thermoplastic cracks exactly along the joint, and the two film sections separate as the slabs move. Surface preparation is assessed before every Granville warehouse job, not assumed. That means checking moisture content, surface pH, contamination, and existing coating compatibility before a product is specified. We've completed 5,000+ warehouse and industrial floor marking jobs since 2009, and we carry $20M public liability insurance. Completion documentation includes product data sheets, application records, and compliance certification.

Two approaches: (1) Break-in-line — the marking stops 20-30mm before the joint on each side, leaving a visible but intentional gap. This is standard for most applications. (2) Flexible product — two-component polyurethane paint rated for joint movement is applied continuously across the joint. More expensive, produces a continuous line appearance. For AS 1742.3 road marking standards, the break approach is documented as the acceptable treatment.

Expansion joints are typically visible as straight clean saw-cut or formed gaps running across the full floor width. They're usually at regular intervals (6-9 metres) and are filled with a compressible filler or sealant. We walk every proposed line run during the assessment and mark all joint crossings on our floor plan before finalising the layout. Transport for NSW approved since 2009. Approval means we meet the contractor qualification, insurance, and technical standards required to work on state roads and local government road networks. We carry $20M public liability and $10M professional indemnity coverage, which your risk manager or procurement team can request in writing. All road marking work in Granville is done to AS 1742.3 traffic control standards with retroreflective thermoplastic to AS/NZS 1906.3. Traffic management plans are provided before every job. You receive as-built completion photos, a compliance statement, and material certification on completion. We also cover Auburn, Merrylands, South Granville on the same schedule.
