Line Marking Kooragang NSW

A workshop facility on Kooragang Island asked us to mark their floor. The facility was in the coal and bulk minerals precinct and had years of fine coal dust accumulation throughout. We pressure-washed thoroughly, the surface looked clean. We primed and marked. Within six weeks, sections near the main workshop entrance and the vehicle access route were showing adhesion loss — the marking was delaminating from the primer layer.

We cut a test section and examined the substrate. The concrete surface profile had coal fines embedded throughout the pore structure. Pressure washing removes surface-level coal dust. It doesn't remove fine coal particles embedded in the concrete surface matrix. The primer had bonded to a coal-contaminated surface rather than clean concrete. The fix was mechanical diamond grinding to physically remove the coal-contaminated surface layer, followed by re-profiling, new primer, and remark.

Kooragang Island is one of Australia's most significant bulk commodity export points — coal terminals, alumina handling, grain, and bulk chemicals. The industrial facilities on the island have substrate conditions unlike anything in standard industrial suburbs. Years of fine coal and mineral dust accumulation penetrates concrete surfaces well beyond what cleaning can address. Mechanical removal of the contaminated surface layer is the only reliable prep approach in this environment.
