Previous Contractor Drawings May Include Non-Compliant Custom Layouts — Review Before You Mark
A Blacktown mixed-use retail development gave us the previous marking contractor's drawings to work from. The drawings included several irregular corner bays that the previous contractor had customised to fit the available space — angled bays in non-standard configurations. We marked them as drawn. During the centre's periodic DDA compliance review, the access consultant identified that four of the custom corner bays were below AS/NZS 2890.1 minimum dimensions — width or length insufficient.
We hadn't reviewed the previous contractor's custom bay shapes for AS/NZS compliance. We'd treated the drawings as the approved layout. The previous contractor may have marked those bays in error, or they may have been signed off without a compliance check at the time.
When working from any previous contractor's drawings, we now review every non-standard bay shape against AS/NZS 2890.1 before marking. Standard rectangular bays in standard dimensions are straightforward. Any angled, irregular, or custom-shaped bay in a corner or transition zone gets checked against the standard minimum dimensions before it's accepted as the proposed layout.
Blacktown is Western Sydney's commercial hub — Westpoint, mixed industrial estates, and the diverse retail and commercial businesses serving one of Sydney's largest catchments. Transport NSW approved. Previous contractor drawing compliance review is standard before any Blacktown retail carpark remark.
