Straddle Carrier Contact Pressure Destroys Standard Thermoplastic in Months
A Port Botany container terminal hardstand needed lane markings for straddle carrier operations. We specified standard Grade A thermoplastic — correct for all heavy vehicle external surfaces. Within six months the markings in the active straddle carrier lanes were worn through completely. The surrounding areas with reach stacker and truck traffic were still in reasonable condition.
Straddle carriers exert enormously high contact pressure — a loaded straddle carrier can weigh 80 tonnes distributed across solid rubber tyres with a relatively small contact patch. The contact pressure per square centimetre is significantly higher than even the heaviest semi-trailer. Standard thermoplastic film build at 3-4mm is inadequate for sustained straddle carrier traffic.
Maritime-grade heavy-film thermoplastic at 6-8mm build — the same product specified for aircraft hardstands and port environments — is the correct specification for straddle carrier lanes. We went back and applied heavy-film product. That application has held through 18 months of straddle carrier traffic. Port environment product specification is confirmed on every Port Botany and container terminal hardstand quote.
Port Botany is NSW's primary container port — Patrick, DP World, and Qube operate 24/7 in a high-security port authority environment. Transport NSW approved. Straddle carrier traffic assessment is mandatory on every Port Botany hardstand marking quote.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Port Botany container terminal hardstands and port logistics facilities are part of our NSW port precinct schedule. Straddle carrier traffic assessment on every hardstand quote — heavy-film 6-8mm thermoplastic for straddle carrier lanes. We've completed 5,000+ projects nationally since 2009 and carry $20M public liability insurance. Every Port Botany quote includes a site assessment, surface condition report, and fixed pricing. No estimates that change at invoicing. For SafeWork NSW improvement notices we can typically assess within 24 hours and deploy within 48-72 hours. Completion comes with photo documentation, a compliance statement, and material specifications. Transport NSW approved for any road or carpark marking that requires local council or state road authority sign-off.
A loaded straddle carrier carrying a container can weigh 60-100 tonnes total. This load is distributed across solid rubber tyres with a relatively small contact patch compared to pneumatic truck tyres at similar loads. The resulting contact pressure per square centimetre is many times higher than a heavy semi-trailer — sufficient to compress and deform standard 3-4mm thermoplastic film progressively until it wears through.
Heavy-film thermoplastic is applied at 6-8mm total film build versus the standard 3-4mm. The thicker film provides substantially more material to wear through before the concrete substrate is exposed. It also uses a harder aggregate blend for abrasion resistance. The product cost per linear metre is approximately double standard product — justified in high-wear port and aviation environments. Line Marking Australia has been working to AS/NZS standards since 2009 and we carry $20M public liability insurance.
