On Floors Over 100 Metres Long, Verify Your Pilot Line at Multiple Points — Not Just at the Start
We were marking a 200-metre-long main aisle in a large Eastern Creek DC. We set up our pilot chalk line from the drawing, confirmed the start position against a column, and began marking. At the 150-metre point, a crew member checking the chalk line against a column noticed it had drifted — the drawn aisle centreline didn't align with the as-built column grid at this end of the building.
The column grid on the drawing showed 9-metre bays throughout. The as-built had a single 9.18-metre bay at position 11 — a 180mm discrepancy that accumulated over the length of the floor. By 150 metres, our chalk line was 180mm off the correct aisle centreline. We'd already marked 120 metres of the aisle. The parallel aisles on the other side would also be affected.
We stopped, re-established the correct pilot line from measured column centrelines rather than the drawing, and remarked from that point. The 120 metres already marked needed partial rework where the deviation was visible. On large floors over 100 metres, we now establish and verify pilot lines at minimum every 30 metres against physical building references — not just at the start point. Drawing dimensions and as-built dimensions diverge on large floors more often than clients expect.
Eastern Creek is Sydney's western logistics mega-hub — Eastern Creek Business Park, the M7/M4 interchange, and the national distribution centres of major retailers and third-party logistics operators. Transport NSW approved. Multi-point pilot line verification is mandatory on every Eastern Creek DC floor over 100 metres.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Eastern Creek Business Park and M7/M4 corridor DCs are part of our western Sydney schedule. Multi-point pilot line verification every 30 metres on every DC floor over 100 metres — as-built building references used, not drawing dimensions alone. We've completed 5,000+ projects nationally since 2009 and carry $20M public liability insurance. Every Eastern Creek quote includes a site assessment, surface condition report, and fixed pricing. No estimates that change at invoicing. For SafeWork NSW improvement notices we can typically assess within 24 hours and deploy within 48-72 hours. Completion comes with photo documentation, a compliance statement, and material specifications. Transport NSW approved for any road or carpark marking that requires local council or state road authority sign-off.
Construction tolerances accumulate over long building lengths — individual bays may be 5-20mm longer or shorter than the drawing dimension. Over 200 metres with 20 bays, individual tolerances can add up to 100-200mm total deviation. Additionally, drawing revision history, metric/imperial conversion errors, and on-site adjustments during construction all contribute to drawing-versus-as-built discrepancy. Surface preparation is assessed before every Eastern Creek warehouse job, not assumed. That means checking moisture content, surface pH, contamination, and existing coating compatibility before a product is specified. We've completed 5,000+ warehouse and industrial floor marking jobs since 2009, and we carry $20M public liability insurance. Completion documentation includes product data sheets, application records, and compliance certification.
We use measured column centrelines as physical reference points. Every 30 metres we check the chalk pilot line position against the nearest measured column centreline. If the deviation exceeds 20mm we re-establish the pilot line from the current measured reference before continuing. Column centrelines are measured directly — tape measure or laser from each column face. Line Marking Australia has been completing marking across Eastern Creek and surrounds since 2009, with 5,000+ projects nationally. We carry $20M public liability and $10M professional indemnity insurance, Transport NSW approved. Every job comes with fixed pricing, photo completion documentation, compliance certification, and material specifications. Yes. Stage-by-stage marking with handover documentation after each session. Each stage's pilot line references are documented so the next session starts from a confirmed measurement, not from the previous session's end point. For very long floors over 200 metres, we typically stage across three sessions.
Transport for NSW approved since 2009. Approval means we meet the contractor qualification, insurance, and technical standards required to work on state roads and local government road networks.
