Polymer Fibre Reinforced Concrete Requires Segmented Grinding Wheels — Continuous Rim Wheels Tangle on the Fibres

A Minchinbury DC had a polymer fibre reinforced wear screed at the loading dock approach — polypropylene fibres mixed into the concrete for crack resistance and durability. The fibres were approximately 20-30mm long and distributed throughout the screed. We used our standard continuous rim diamond grinding wheel for surface preparation.

The grinding wheel began catching on the exposed fibre ends at the surface. Rather than cutting cleanly, the continuous rim wheel pulled at the fibres and created score marks and surface tears across the grinding path — the fibres twisted around the rim and dragged adjacent surface material. The prepared surface was uneven and had raised fibre tufts.

Polymer fibre reinforced concrete requires segmented diamond grinding wheels — the gaps between segments allow fibres to pass through rather than tangle. Segmented wheels cut the fibres cleanly at the grinding depth rather than dragging them. We switched to a segmented wheel on the second pass and the preparation was clean.

Minchinbury is at the M7/M4 intersection — Eastern Creek adjacent, large DCs, and the western Sydney logistics businesses that make it one of the state's most strategically located industrial addresses. Transport NSW approved. Polymer fibre reinforced concrete identification and grinding wheel selection is now confirmed before preparing any Minchinbury DC dock approach or wear screed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Minchinbury M7/M4 corridor DCs are part of our western Sydney schedule. Polymer fibre reinforced concrete identified before surface preparation — segmented grinding wheel for fibre screed zones. We've completed 5,000+ projects nationally since 2009 and carry $20M public liability insurance. Every Minchinbury quote includes a site assessment, surface condition report, and fixed pricing. No estimates that change at invoicing. For SafeWork NSW improvement notices we can typically assess within 24 hours and deploy within 48-72 hours. Completion comes with photo documentation, a compliance statement, and material specifications. Transport NSW approved for any road or carpark marking that requires local council or state road authority sign-off.

Visible fibre ends at the surface are the primary indicator — look for fine white or grey fibres protruding from the concrete surface, particularly at edges and worn areas. The builder's concrete specification will confirm polypropylene or steel fibre content. A light surface scratch with a nail sometimes reveals fibre strands in the scratch furrow. Line Marking Australia has been completing marking across Minchinbury and surrounds since 2009, with 5,000+ projects nationally. We carry $20M public liability and $10M professional indemnity insurance, Transport NSW approved. Continuous rim wheels have an uninterrupted diamond-impregnated edge around the full circumference. Segmented wheels have diamond segments separated by gaps. In standard concrete, both cut efficiently. In fibre-reinforced concrete, the continuous rim traps and tangles fibres between the wheel rim and the surface — the gaps in a segmented wheel allow fibres to pass through and be cut rather than dragged.

Different mechanism. Steel fibres are stiffer and don't tangle as readily as polypropylene fibres. But steel fibres exposed at the surface can cause different issues — they can generate sparks with grinding wheels in certain configurations, and exposed steel fibre ends are a contamination concern in food facility environments. Segmented wheels are still preferred for steel fibre concrete as a precaution.

Transport for NSW approved since 2009. Approval means we meet the contractor qualification, insurance, and technical standards required to work on state roads and local government road networks. We carry $20M public liability and $10M professional indemnity coverage, which your risk manager or procurement team can request in writing. All road marking work in Minchinbury is done to AS 1742.3 traffic control standards with retroreflective thermoplastic to AS/NZS 1906.3. Traffic management plans are provided before every job. You receive as-built completion photos, a compliance statement, and material certification on completion. We also cover Eastern Creek, Rooty Hill, St Marys on the same schedule.
