Cold Chain Facilities Need Three Different Products — Not One
A cold chain logistics operator in Prestons needed their full facility remarked. The previous contractor had used standard waterborne paint throughout — ambient, chilled, and freezer anteroom zones all marked with the same product. The freezer anteroom sections had failed within five months, chipping off in sheets wherever the floor went below 5 degrees.
We assessed the facility: 9,400 square metres across three distinct temperature environments. Ambient loading zones, chilled distribution staging, and freezer anteroom access. Three different temperature zones, three different product specifications. Standard waterborne for ambient. Cold-rated waterborne for chilled staging. Low-temperature two-pack system for the freezer anteroom. Quoted clearly by zone. Completed over two weekends. The freezer anteroom sections are still performing two years later.
We also admitted a mistake on that same job: we completed the freezer anteroom marking correctly but forgot to include a cure time instruction in the handover. Operations brought that zone back to sub-zero temperature within 12 hours. The product needed 48 hours at ambient to cure fully before temperature drop. We had sections show cure weakness and had to touch them up. Zero cost to the client — our oversight. Temperature transition instructions are now a mandatory item on every cold storage completion handover.
Prestons sits adjacent to Moorebank on the south-west Sydney M5/M7 corridor. Cold chain, FMCG, general logistics. The precinct has grown significantly as operators have expanded south-west from Ingleburn. Cold chain work is a regular part of what we do here.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Cold chain facilities in Prestons are a regular part of our south-west Sydney work. Multi-temperature zone product specification — ambient, chilled, and freezer anteroom each get different products rated for their operating temperature. We document which product was applied in which zone and include temperature transition instructions in the completion handover.
Wrong product for the operating temperature. Standard waterborne paint doesn't cure properly when the ambient temperature drops — the curing process is interrupted and the film integrity is compromised. In freezer anteroom zones that cycle between ambient and sub-zero, you need a low-temperature rated two-pack system designed to remain flexible under freeze-thaw cycling. Standard products become brittle and chip.
After marking, the product needs adequate cure time at ambient temperature before the zone is brought back to its operating temperature. For freezer antechamber zones, that's typically 48 hours minimum. If you bring the zone back to sub-zero within 12 hours, the cure is interrupted and you'll have adhesion weakness in sections. We include these instructions specifically in every cold storage handover — they're the most important thing to get right after the marking itself.
Yes. Transport for NSW approved. Liverpool City Council road specifications for local Prestons roads. Traffic management to AS 1742.3. Thermoplastic for all external road and carpark surfaces.
With correct product selection and application: 5-7 years in chilled zones, 4-6 years in freezer anteroom zones under normal forklift traffic. The variables are freeze-thaw cycle frequency and forklift traffic intensity. Standard products in the same environment: 3-6 months before failure. The right product is not optional in cold chain — it's cheaper than remarking every year.
