Densifier Applied on Top of Power-Trowel Finish Creates a Near-Impermeable Surface That Standard Grinding Won't Fix
An Erskine Park logistics DC had a power-trowel finished slab — already a smooth, low-profile surface — that the polishing contractor had then treated with a lithium silicate densifier to harden the surface further. The densifier application on a power-trowel finish closes the surface almost completely. Absorption is near zero. We applied standard primer. Patchy take-up across the densifier zones, adequate in sections where the densifier coverage was thin.
Standard diamond grinding to CSP-2 is sufficient for a power-trowel finish alone. With a densifier applied on top, CSP-2 isn't enough — the densified layer is harder than the concrete below it and grinds slowly. You need to grind past the densified layer entirely to reach unmodified concrete below, which typically requires CSP-3 profile — a more aggressive grind pass.
We identified the densifier during the adhesion test: a drop of muriatic acid on a sound concrete surface etches and fizzes. On the densified zones there was no fizz — the densifier had reacted all available calcium and the surface was inert. That test confirmed we needed deeper grinding. We completed the grind and marked successfully.

CSP-3 is a more aggressive profile achieved by harder grinding tools or additional passes — needed when a densified layer has hardened the surface beyond the range of standard grinding to adequately open. CSP-3 looks slightly rougher than CSP-2 but provides the necessary adhesion key.
CSP-3 grinding on a densified surface takes 40-60% longer per square metre than CSP-2 on standard concrete. On a large DC floor, this is a meaningful additional cost.
