Flush-Mounted Camera Housings in Carpark Surfaces Must Be Identified and Excluded From Marking

An Osborne Park commercial showroom carpark had an automated access control system with under-vehicle scanning cameras flush-mounted in the carpark surface at the entry and exit lanes. The camera housings were circular, approximately 150mm diameter, and set flush with the asphalt — nearly invisible unless you knew to look for them.

We marked a directional arrow that ran across one of the flush-mounted camera housings. Thermoplastic partially covered the camera lens cover. The access control system operator contacted the centre manager the following day — the camera's image quality was degraded by the thermoplastic over the lens area.

Flush-mounted infrastructure in carpark surfaces — cameras, sensors, inductive loops, weigh-in-motion pads — are typically not on any marking drawing. They're access system infrastructure installed independently of the carpark marking. We now conduct a deliberate floor-level scan during the pre-marking walkthrough of any Osborne Park or Perth commercial carpark, looking for flush-mounted objects at a low viewing angle. Anything flush with the surface that isn't a drain or standard access cover gets flagged before marking.

Osborne Park is Perth's northern showroom and commercial strip — Scarborough Beach Road, Mitchell Freeway access, and the large-format retail and trade businesses. MRWA approved. Flush-mounted surface infrastructure identification is standard on every Osborne Park commercial carpark assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Osborne Park Scarborough Beach Road showroom and commercial carparks are part of our Perth northern schedule. Floor-level scan for flush-mounted surface infrastructure before every carpark marking session. We've completed 5,000+ projects nationally since 2009 and carry $20M public liability insurance. Every Osborne Park quote includes a site assessment, surface condition report, and fixed pricing. No estimates that change at invoicing. For WorkSafe WA improvement notices we can typically assess within 24 hours and deploy within 48-72 hours. Completion comes with photo documentation, a compliance statement, and material specifications. MRWA approved for any road or carpark marking that requires local council or state road authority sign-off.

Inductive loop detectors (a saw-cut coil of wire in the asphalt surface for vehicle detection), weigh-in-motion pads (rectangular flush sensor panels for vehicle weight measurement), under-vehicle inspection camera housings, and some ANPR camera systems. Inductive loops are most common — virtually every boom gate system uses them. They appear as a rectangular saw-cut pattern in the asphalt. Line Marking Australia has been completing marking across Osborne Park and surrounds since 2009, with 5,000+ projects nationally. We carry $20M public liability and $10M professional indemnity insurance, MRWA approved. Inductive loops are visible as saw-cut lines in the asphalt surface in a rectangular pattern (typically 1.5m x 2m) with a small lead-out cut to the kerb or loop controller box. The cut is filled with a dark sealant. They're identifiable from a normal standing position with attention. Under-vehicle cameras require a low viewing angle to spot the flush housing.

Inductive loops are designed to be painted over — the loop wiring is below the surface and thermoplastic doesn't affect the inductive field. Camera lens covers and sensor surfaces should not be covered. The distinction is between infrastructure that works through the surface (loops, weigh pads) and infrastructure that requires an unobstructed surface view (cameras).
