External Carparks With 1:25 Gradients Need Temperature-Adjusted Application to Prevent Downhill Run
A Forrestfield DC had an external carpark with a significant site gradient — approximately 1:25 across the main parking area, designed for stormwater drainage. Perth's summer temperatures were pushing 36°C on the day we marked. Thermoplastic at 180°C on a 1:25 gradient in 36°C ambient heat has an extended fluid phase — the hot asphalt surface reduces the cooling rate and the material stays fluid for longer than in normal conditions.
Lines on the steeper sections had a 3-5mm material accumulation on the downhill edge — the hot thermoplastic ran slightly downhill during the extended fluid phase before setting. Not a safety issue or an adhesion failure, but the edge quality was inconsistent with the rest of the carpark.
Two factors compounded: the gradient and the summer ambient heat. Either alone would have been manageable. Together, they significantly extended the fluid phase and the run distance. In Perth summers on sloped external carparks, we now apply thermoplastic at the lower temperature range (175°C) and work on the steeper sections during the cooler part of the session — early morning when asphalt surface temperatures are lower.
Forrestfield is Perth's eastern industrial corridor — Kalamunda Road, Dundas Road, the High Wycombe adjacent DCs, and the manufacturing and distribution businesses between the Roe Highway and the Darling Escarpment. MRWA approved. External gradient and summer ambient temperature assessment is standard before scheduling any Forrestfield steep-grade carpark.

External gradient and ambient temperature assessment before scheduling steep-grade carparks in Perth summer. We've completed 5,000+ projects nationally since 2009 and carry $20M public liability insurance. Every Forrestfield quote includes a site assessment, surface condition report, and fixed pricing. No estimates that change at invoicing. For WorkSafe WA improvement notices we can typically assess within 24 hours and deploy within 48-72 hours. Completion comes with photo documentation, a compliance statement, and material specifications. MRWA approved for any road or carpark marking that requires local council or state road authority sign-off.
Gradients above 1:40 warrant monitoring in normal conditions. Above 1:25, particularly in temperatures above 30°C ambient, we apply lower thermoplastic temperature and schedule the steep sections for early morning. Above 1:15, we consider cold-applied road marking paint for the steep sections instead of thermoplastic. Hot asphalt surface temperature slows the thermoplastic cooling rate. Normal thermoplastic on flat asphalt at 25°C sets in about 60-90 seconds. On hot asphalt at 40°C surface temperature, the setting time extends to 2-4 minutes. A 1:25 gradient with a 2-4 minute fluid phase is enough for 5-10mm of downhill run, which is visible in the finished marking. Line Marking Australia has been completing marking across Forrestfield and surrounds since 2009, with 5,000+ projects nationally. Internal floors are temperature-controlled environments — typically 15-25°C — and cooling rates are normal regardless of gradient. Internal gradient marking uses trowel application for floors above 1:60 (as we do at Invermay TAS). External carpark gradient issues are amplified by summer ambient heat in Perth. Surface preparation is assessed before every Forrestfield warehouse job, not assumed. That means checking moisture content, surface pH, contamination, and existing coating compatibility before a product is specified. We've completed 5,000+ warehouse and industrial floor marking jobs since 2009, and we carry $20M public liability insurance. Completion documentation includes product data sheets, application records, and compliance certification.
Main Roads WA approved since 2009. Approval means we meet the contractor qualification, insurance, and technical standards required to work on state roads and local government road networks. We carry $20M public liability and $10M professional indemnity coverage, which your risk manager or procurement team can request in writing. All road marking work in Forrestfield is done to AS 1742.3 traffic control standards with retroreflective thermoplastic to AS/NZS 1906.3. Traffic management plans are provided before every job. You receive as-built completion photos, a compliance statement, and material certification on completion. We also cover High Wycombe, Welshpool, Canning Vale on the same schedule.
