Rubber Crumb From Tyre Recycling Coats the Entire Concrete Surface and Sits in Every Pore
A Wingfield tyre recycling facility had a concrete hardstand where years of rubber crumb processing had deposited fine crumb particles across the full surface. Unlike mechanical tyre rubber contamination from vehicle tyres — which embeds in localised wear zones — rubber crumb is a fine powder that settles and compacts into every surface pore across the entire hardstand.
We ground to CSP-2 and applied primer. Pull-off testing revealed consistently low bond strength across the full surface — the grinding had removed the visible surface crumb but hadn't cleared the crumb particles from within the pore structure. The primer was bonding to crumb-contaminated pore walls rather than clean concrete.
Rubber crumb in surface pores requires both CSP-3 grinding to remove the surface crumb layer and a compressed air blow-out and high-pressure water flush to clear the pores of residual fine particles before priming. We ground to CSP-3, pressure-flushed, allowed to dry, and retested — pull-off strength was adequate. The additional grinding and flush added around $700 to the preparation cost but the subsequent marking has held for over two years.
Wingfield is Adelaide's northern industrial core — recycling, manufacturing, and freight forwarding on the Port River Expressway and North-South Motorway. DPTI approved. Rubber crumb surface assessment and pore-flush preparation is standard on every Wingfield recycling facility hardstand.

No estimates that change at invoicing. For SafeWork SA improvement notices we can typically assess within 24 hours and deploy within 48-72 hours. DPTI approved for any road or carpark marking that requires local council or state road authority sign-off.
CSP-2 removes approximately 0.5-1mm of surface material — sufficient to clear mechanical tyre rubber that's embedded in the surface matrix. Rubber crumb is a much finer powder (typically 0.5-2mm particle size) that settles into the concrete pore structure at depths below the CSP-2 grinding zone. CSP-3 removes 2-3mm, clearing the crumb-contaminated surface layer, then a pore flush removes residual fine particles from the remaining pore structure.
After CSP-3 grinding, rubber crumb particles that were lodged in the pore structure are now exposed at the ground surface and can be displaced. A high-pressure water wash drives water through the pores, carrying loose crumb particles out. A compressed air blow-out before the water wash loosens any remaining compacted crumb in the deeper pores. The combination clears the pore structure to bare concrete.
Yes. Pull-off adhesion testing after preparation and a test primer application confirms the pore flush was adequate — pull-off results above 1.5 MPa consistently across the hardstand confirm clean concrete contact. If any zones test below 1.5 MPa, additional flushing and retesting of those zones is required.
