A Mansfield Park automotive facility had a concrete forecourt adjacent to a former petrol station that had been decommissioned but not remediated. The forecourt had decades of petrol and diesel spill contamination from fuel deliveries and vehicle fill-ups. The surface appeared clean — it had been pressure-washed before we arrived.

Standard primer adhesion pull-off testing: 0.6 MPa across the forecourt. Not acceptable. We applied a commercial alkaline degreaser, scrubbed, and rinsed. Retested: 0.8 MPa. Better but still below 1.5 MPa minimum. Applied a second hot degreaser cycle: 1.1 MPa. Still not adequate.

Petrol station forecourt concrete is fundamentally different from workshop floor concrete with spot hydraulic oil contamination. The forecourt concrete has been exposed to fuel saturation for its full depth over decades — the hydrocarbon loading is so deep that even multiple hot degreasing cycles can't fully clear it. The correct approach for a fuel-saturated forecourt is a penetrating epoxy injection or, more practically, grinding to a depth below the contamination zone (typically 15-20mm) and starting from clean concrete.
