Cold Joint Construction Sealants Can Migrate 30-40mm Onto the Adjacent Slab Surface

A Salisbury manufacturing facility floor had a cold joint between two concrete pours — a construction joint where the first slab section was poured and set before the adjacent section was poured against it. The contractor had applied a silicone-based bond breaker sealant to the face of the first pour before placing the second pour against it, to prevent the two sections bonding together.

In some applications, the silicone sealant is applied too heavily or without a backing rod and migrates slightly onto the top surface of the first pour along the joint edge. We didn't notice the migration strip during assessment — it was only 30-40mm wide and didn't look different from the surrounding concrete.

Primer fish-eyed in a precise 30-40mm strip running the full length of the cold joint on one side. Classic silicone contamination pattern, but narrower and more linear than typical silicone sealer or spray seal fish-eye. The bead-water test on the adjacent concrete was fine; the fish-eye strip itself bead-tested positive for silicone.

Salisbury is the heart of Adelaide's northern industrial and defence corridor — Main North Road, Salisbury Highway, and the manufacturing and logistics businesses adjacent to RAAF Edinburgh. DPTI approved. Cold joint edges are now specifically checked with the bead-water test on every Salisbury manufacturing floor with visible construction joints.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Salisbury Main North Road manufacturing and industrial facilities are part of our Adelaide northern schedule. Cold joint edges bead-water tested for silicone migration on every floor with visible construction joints. We've completed 5,000+ projects nationally since 2009 and carry $20M public liability insurance. Every Salisbury quote includes a site assessment, surface condition report, and fixed pricing. No estimates that change at invoicing. For SafeWork SA improvement notices we can typically assess within 24 hours and deploy within 48-72 hours. Completion comes with photo documentation, a compliance statement, and material specifications. DPTI approved for any road or carpark marking that requires local council or state road authority sign-off.

Cold joint sealants and bond breakers are applied to the vertical face of the first pour. Without a correctly positioned backing rod to control the sealant depth, or when applied by brush rather than gun, the sealant can slump or spread from the face onto the top surface of the first pour along the joint edge. We carry $20M public liability and $10M professional indemnity insurance, DPTI approved. Typically 20-50mm from the joint edge onto the adjacent slab surface, depending on how the sealant was applied. The strip is sometimes visible as a very slight colour change or sheen in raking light, but often completely invisible until a bead-water test or primer application reveals it. Yes — diamond grinding 1-2mm depth over the joint edge strip removes the silicone migration. The grinding produces a slightly different surface texture along the joint edge, but this is covered by the marking and not visible in normal conditions.
