When we mobilised, our standard thermoplastic marking vehicle couldn't access the external yard through the side gate — the gate opening was 1.8m and our machine required 2.1m clearance. The yard access was physically too narrow for the equipment we'd planned to use.

We stood the crew down for the yard section and hired a narrow-track spray marking machine on short notice. The hire cost was partially absorbed by us — we should have measured the gate opening during the assessment. It added a day and a cost overhead to a job that should have been straightforward. Gate opening width is now measured specifically during every Cavan and inner-north Adelaide site assessment. If it's under 2.2m, we note the equipment constraint in the quote and either specify different equipment or flag that the yard scope requires separate scheduling with appropriate machinery.

Cavan sits in Adelaide's inner-north industrial belt — compact manufacturing sites, narrow roads, and older building stock with access constraints that larger suburban industrial estates don't have. It's not just gate widths: overhead clearances, turning radii in tight internal yards, and proximity to adjacent buildings all affect equipment selection. You can't assume standard equipment access on an inner-north Adelaide site without checking.
