EV Charging Cable Trays Flush With the Carpark Surface Need to Be Identified — Thermoplastic Doesn't Adhere to Aluminium

A Burton automotive facility had recently installed an EV charging station in their carpark. The charger post was anchored next to an accessible bay, and a floor-level cable management tray ran from the post across the carpark to the building entry — a 100mm wide aluminium extrusion cover flush with the asphalt. It was the same height as the asphalt and only slightly different in colour.

We marked a bay line that crossed the cable management tray cover. The thermoplastic applied over the aluminium tray had no adhesion — aluminium has low surface energy for thermoplastic bonding without a primer specifically formulated for metal. The marking lifted cleanly from the aluminium tray section within weeks while remaining bonded to the asphalt on both sides.

EV charging infrastructure is appearing in Australian commercial carparks rapidly, and floor-level cable management systems are a common installation detail. Aluminium tray covers, steel conduit covers, and fibreglass cable protection strips installed flush with the carpark surface all create marking adhesion problems if not identified.

Burton is the Salisbury City northern industrial corridor — Port Wakefield Road automotive, manufacturing, and the light industrial businesses north of Salisbury proper. DPTI approved. Floor-level EV and electrical infrastructure check is now standard before any Burton carpark marking session.

Standard thermoplastic formulations are designed for asphalt and concrete substrates — both porous, reactive surfaces that provide mechanical and chemical bonding opportunities. Aluminium is a smooth, non-porous metal with low surface energy for standard thermoplastic. Without a metal-compatible adhesion promoter, the thermoplastic physically rests on the aluminium rather than bonding to it. Options: route the bay line to either side of the tray rather than crossing it (leaves a gap in the line at the tray position); apply a metal-compatible adhesion promoter to the tray cover before thermoplastic application; or use cold-applied road marking paint which has better flexibility on mixed substrate surfaces. We discuss the options before marking any tray crossing.

Yes — steel mounting plates flush with the asphalt for bollard anchors, fibreglass or plastic cable conduit covers at surface level, and resin-infill drainage channel covers adjacent to charger posts can all have adhesion challenges.
