HACCP Plans Specify Which Colours Are Food-Safe — Standard Yellow May Not Be One of Them
A fresh produce distribution facility near the Pooraka Market asked us to mark their floor with standard yellow forklift lanes and white pedestrian walkways. We completed the marking and provided documentation. Their HACCP compliance officer reviewed the completion documentation and flagged an issue: their specific HACCP plan listed the approved floor marking colours for the facility, and standard yellow was not on the list. Their HACCP had specified a food-safe blue for forklift traffic zones — a colour visually distinct from food products and approved by their HACCP auditor.
We stripped the yellow zones and remarked in the approved blue. The food-safe paint formulation is also different — low-VOC, no aromatic compounds, compliant with food production environment air quality requirements. The client's HACCP officer had the right documentation but assumed we would ask. We should have asked. HACCP plan colour requirements are now a specific pre-quote question on every fresh produce, food manufacturing, and food distribution facility in Pooraka.
Pooraka is home to the Adelaide Produce Market and the cold chain and fresh food distribution businesses that cluster around it. It's also a general industrial suburb with recycling, automotive, and manufacturing businesses. The fresh food character creates specific marking requirements that don't apply anywhere else in Adelaide. HACCP compliance, cold chain zone demarcation, and food-safe product chemistry are part of the job here.
SA DIT approved. We've been marking Pooraka fresh produce and industrial facilities since 2009.

Yes. Pooraka fresh produce, Pooraka Market adjacent facilities, and cold chain distribution are part of our regular northern Adelaide schedule. We've completed 5,000+ projects nationally since 2009 and carry $20M public liability insurance. Every Pooraka quote includes a site assessment, surface condition report, and fixed pricing. No estimates that change at invoicing. For SafeWork SA improvement notices we can typically assess within 24 hours and deploy within 48-72 hours. Completion comes with photo documentation, a compliance statement, and material specifications. DPTI approved for any road or carpark marking that requires local council or state road authority sign-off.
HACCP plans for food facilities specify approved colours for all floor markings in production and distribution zones. The approved colours are typically chosen to be visually distinct from food products — preventing confusion between floor markings and spilled product — and may be limited to formulations with food-safe chemistry. Standard yellow and red may not be on the approved list for your specific HACCP. We ask for the floor marking section of your HACCP plan before proposing any layout.
Food-safe floor marking products are low-VOC formulations without aromatic solvent carriers, approved for use in food production and distribution environments. They're typically waterborne two-pack epoxy or polyurethane systems. Standard solvent-based epoxy off-gasses compounds that are unacceptable in HACCP-audited environments. We specify food-safe formulations as standard for all Pooraka fresh produce and food facility floor zones. Surface preparation is assessed before every Pooraka warehouse job, not assumed. That means checking moisture content, surface pH, contamination, and existing coating compatibility before a product is specified. We've completed 5,000+ warehouse and industrial floor marking jobs since 2009, and we carry $20M public liability insurance. Completion documentation includes product data sheets, application records, and compliance certification.
