A Kilburn industrial centre had been marked and remarkd at least four times over 25 years — each remark painted over the previous rather than removing it. The accumulated paint build-up in some bay lines was 8-10mm thick. When we ground off the accumulated marking, the concrete surface had a heavily stained ghost pattern from 25 years of paint penetration — not just a shadow but a physically visible coloured zone.

We marked the new layout over the cleaned surface. Drivers using the carpark for the first time after the remark consistently followed the old ghost bay positions rather than the new lines in the first few weeks — the ghost staining was visible enough to read as guidance, particularly in morning and afternoon raking light.

Multi-layer accumulated paint over 25+ years creates a ghost that's more than a textural shadow — it's an actual paint residue in the concrete that can't be removed without deep grinding. For a new layout that matches the old layout, this isn't an issue. For a new layout that changes the bay orientation or traffic flow, the ghost from multi-layer accumulated marking needs to be assessed and either ground deeper or accepted as a driver behaviour risk for the first few months.
