Stamped Concrete Texture Is Different From Broadcast Aggregate — The Profile Is Consistent and Can Be Accommodated
A Sandy Bay commercial building Level 2 carpark had a herringbone-pattern stamped concrete anti-slip finish on the deck surface. Stamped concrete texture uses a rubber or polyurethane stamp pressed into the wet concrete surface, creating a defined repeating pattern with consistent peak-and-valley geometry. The ridges are typically 3-5mm high with rounded profile rather than the sharp angular aggregate profile of broadcast aggregate.
We applied standard machine thermoplastic. The result was slightly inconsistent — the machine shoe bridged marginally over the stamp valley recesses in the regular pattern, creating a slight thickness variation that showed as a subtle corrugated texture in the dried marking surface. Not a safety or adhesion failure, but visible enough that the centre manager asked about it.
Stamped concrete texture is more predictable than broadcast aggregate because the pattern is regular and the profile dimensions are consistent. A slightly higher machine shoe setting — raising the shoe clearance by 2-3mm — accommodates the stamp ridge height and produces consistent film thickness across both peaks and valleys. We now assess stamped concrete surfaces and adjust the shoe setting before the first marking pass.
Sandy Bay is Hobart's southern commercial and education suburb — University of Tasmania Hobart campus, Wrest Point Casino, Sandy Bay Road retail, and the medical businesses. TAS approved.

Broadcast aggregate has random aggregate distribution and variable peak heights — the challenge is unpredictability. Stamped concrete has a regular, consistent repeating pattern with defined peak heights — the challenge is the defined profile height, but it's predictable. Once the shoe clearance is set correctly for the stamp ridge height, the marking is consistent across the full deck. Yes — a slightly higher shoe setting produces a slightly thicker thermoplastic film overall. For standard commercial carparks this is acceptable — slightly thicker film means slightly better durability in high-wear zones. The film is still within the acceptable range for AS/NZS performance. Yes — cold-applied paint conforms to the surface profile rather than bridging over it, because it's a liquid at application temperature. It wets into the stamp valleys and dries to a consistent thickness across the full texture. The durability trade-off versus thermoplastic applies.
