A Derwent Park manufacturing company called us about a WorkSafe Tasmania improvement notice — forklift lanes not clearly marked in the production entry zone, no pedestrian demarcation through the dispatch area. Fourteen days.

Winter in Hobart. Surface temperature in the dispatch area at 8am was 7 degrees when we assessed on a Tuesday morning — below our minimum threshold for waterborne products. We checked the extended forecast, identified a Thursday afternoon window where internal temperatures were expected to reach 12 degrees by 10am. Scheduled the crew for Thursday midday start, completed Thursday and Friday. WorkSafe Tasmania accepted the documentation the following week.

We learned an important lesson in 2020 about Tasmania's weather variability. We started an external Derwent Park carpark job on a morning the forecast called clear. Surface temperature was 11 degrees at 9am — above threshold. By 11am a front came through, temperature dropped to 7 degrees and light rain started. We stopped and covered what we'd done. Two sections down for 90 minutes were fine — they'd cured sufficiently. Three sections down for 30 minutes or less needed reapplication after the surface dried.

Tasmania's weather changes faster than Melbourne or Sydney. We now build a mid-job temperature and weather check into every Derwent Park outdoor job at the 90-minute mark. Not just at the start — midway through as well.
