Standard Glass Beads Dissolve in Bass Strait Salt Spray — Marine-Grade Beads Don't
We marked a large carpark adjacent to the Spirit of Tasmania terminal in Devonport. External, highly exposed, full Bass Strait salt spray exposure. We used standard thermoplastic with standard retroreflective glass beads — the correct specification for a standard external carpark. Within 18 months the retroreflectivity had declined dramatically. The markings were still visible in daylight but virtually invisible at night with headlights.
We assessed: the thermoplastic film itself was in reasonable condition. The glass beads — which provide the retroreflectivity — had been leached by saline condensation. Standard glass beads have a calcium-based coating that dissolves in repeated salt water exposure. The beads lose their surface properties and retroreflective performance collapses without the bead matrix being affected.
Marine-grade glass beads with a corrosion-resistant coating are specified for any surface with continuous salt spray exposure. They're more expensive than standard beads. In a standard inland carpark you'd never need them. In a Bass Strait-adjacent terminal carpark in Devonport, they're the only product that holds retroreflectivity through the salt season.
Devonport is Tasmania's north-west gateway — Spirit of Tasmania terminal, VITAS ferry precinct, growing north-west logistics, and the commercial hub for north-west Tasmania. State Growth approved. Marine-grade glass beads are now standard specification for any Devonport external surface within 500 metres of Bass Strait.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Devonport Spirit of Tasmania terminal, port precinct, and commercial carparks are part of our north-west Tasmania schedule. Marine-grade glass beads specified for all surfaces within 500 metres of Bass Strait — standard beads dissolve in salt spray and lose retroreflectivity within 18 months. We've completed 5,000+ projects nationally since 2009 and carry $20M public liability insurance. Every Devonport quote includes a site assessment, surface condition report, and fixed pricing. No estimates that change at invoicing. For WorkSafe Tasmania improvement notices we can typically assess within 24 hours and deploy within 48-72 hours. Completion comes with photo documentation, a compliance statement, and material specifications. TAS Roads approved for any road or carpark marking that requires local council or state road authority sign-off.
Standard retroreflective glass beads have a calcium silicate surface coating that provides the reflective properties. Salt spray condensation — particularly the fine aerosol from Bass Strait during westerly weather — dissolves this coating over repeated exposure cycles. The bead physically remains embedded in the thermoplastic but the surface chemistry has been degraded and retroreflectivity is lost. Marine-grade beads have a corrosion-resistant coating that withstands salt spray.
Significant salt spray exposure extends 300-500 metres from the Bass Strait shoreline in Devonport, depending on prevailing wind direction. The Spirit of Tasmania terminal and port precinct are in the primary exposure zone. We assess coastal proximity during the site visit and specify marine-grade beads for any surface within 500 metres of the Mersey River estuary or direct Bass Strait frontage.
Yes. Cold climate protocols apply May through September — surface temperature check before external jobs, minimum 10°C threshold. Devonport's coastal position means it's slightly milder than inland Tasmania in winter, but overnight frosts still occur in June through August. We check surface temperature and moisture before every Devonport external winter job.
