Wind Overspray in a Tight Invermay Yard Can Reach an Adjacent Building in Seconds
We were remarking a carpark at an Invermay manufacturing facility. Tight yard, buildings on two sides, exposed on the north. We were using a spray machine for external carpark lines. The wind picked up from the north while we were marking — variable gusts of 15-20km/h. Paint mist carried over the boundary and deposited on the adjacent building's freshly painted white wall. A 3-metre long, 600mm high band of yellow mist visible from the street.
We stopped immediately, contacted the building owner, arranged professional cleaning the following day. The cleaning worked but wasn't instantaneous — the mist had partially set. Total cost including our cleaning contribution: around $1,400. Our wind protocol had said check wind before starting. We'd checked and it was calm. We hadn't accounted for the change during marking.
Our current protocol for spray machine use in confined yards: wind check at the start and at 20-minute intervals throughout. If wind picks up above 10km/h in a direction toward adjacent buildings or surfaces, we switch to a non-spray method — brush-applied product or a walk-behind machine with a shroud — for exposed sections. It's slower. It's always the right call near adjacent boundaries.
Invermay is Launceston's industrial quarter — automotive trade, manufacturing, logistics, and light industrial businesses along the Tamar River corridor. State Growth approved. We've been marking Invermay and greater Launceston facilities since 2009.

Yes. Invermay industrial facilities and commercial carparks are part of our northern Tasmania Launceston schedule. We've completed 5,000+ projects nationally since 2009 and carry $20M public liability insurance. Every Invermay quote includes a site assessment, surface condition report, and fixed pricing. No estimates that change at invoicing. For WorkSafe Tasmania improvement notices we can typically assess within 24 hours and deploy within 48-72 hours. Completion comes with photo documentation, a compliance statement, and material specifications. TAS Roads approved for any road or carpark marking that requires local council or state road authority sign-off.
Above 10km/h in a direction toward the adjacent boundary. Paint mist from a spray machine can travel 3-5 metres at 10-15km/h. At 20km/h, it can reach a wall on the other side of a standard industrial lot boundary. We monitor continuously and switch to brush or shrouded walk-behind methods if wind picks up during the job. Yes. Brush-applied thermoplastic for standard lines, or a walk-behind machine with a directional shroud that contains spray within the nozzle envelope. It's slower than open spray — roughly 60% of the throughput rate. For a tight yard surrounded by buildings, we default to the shrouded method regardless of forecast conditions.
