A 6am Opening After a 4am Marking Completion Isn't Enough Cure Time for the Final Section
We completed a Kingston retail shopping centre carpark overnight, finishing the last section at 4am. The centre's management company planned to open the carpark at 6am for early traders and cleaning staff — a 2-hour gap between the final marking application and the first vehicle entry.
Thermoplastic applied at 3:30-4am was only 90 minutes old when the first vehicles arrived at 6am. Standard Grade A thermoplastic in Kingston's 8°C overnight winter temperature needed approximately 3 hours to reach adequate cure for traffic loading. The first vehicles to use those bays left tyre marks in the under-cured thermoplastic in the most recently marked section.
The management company had been told we'd finish by 4am. What they hadn't been told — and what we hadn't communicated clearly — was that the section finished at 4am needed until at least 7am before it was safe for traffic. A 'completed at 4am' notification to the centre manager wasn't the same as a 'safe for traffic at 4am' confirmation.
We now provide a completion time AND a safe-for-traffic time separately in every overnight session brief. For Kingston and any Hobart or TAS winter overnight session, the safe-for-traffic time is typically completion time plus 3-4 hours at overnight temperatures. TAS approved.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Kingston Channel Court and Kingborough commercial and community carparks are part of our Hobart schedule. Completion time and safe-for-traffic time provided separately in every overnight session brief. We've completed 5,000+ projects nationally since 2009 and carry $20M public liability insurance. Every Kingston quote includes a site assessment, surface condition report, and fixed pricing. No estimates that change at invoicing. For WorkSafe Tasmania improvement notices we can typically assess within 24 hours and deploy within 48-72 hours. Completion comes with photo documentation, a compliance statement, and material specifications. TAS Roads approved for any road or carpark marking that requires local council or state road authority sign-off.
At 6-10°C overnight temperatures (typical Kingston May-September range), Grade A thermoplastic reaches adequate cure for passenger vehicle traffic in approximately 2.5-3.5 hours. For heavy vehicle or forklift traffic, allow 4-5 hours. For pedestrian-only access, 60-90 minutes is generally safe. For standard Kingston jobs we quote within 48 hours of receiving site plans. Scheduling depends on crew availability and access windows, but most jobs are completed within 5-10 business days of quote acceptance. Urgent WorkSafe notice response can be accelerated to 24-48 hours for assessment and 2-4 days for completion. Call Niel on 0417 460 236 if timing is critical.
Not reliably. Thermoplastic cure is a crystallisation process driven by temperature and time — there's no practical field accelerant. Forced air cooling with fans slightly accelerates the process in still-air conditions but the gain is 15-20 minutes at most. Plan the session completion time based on the required traffic-opening time, not the other way around. Yes — and that's the communication change we made after this incident. The 'job done' notification tells the manager the crew has left. The 'safe for traffic' notification tells the manager when the first vehicle can enter. These are different times and the difference matters for early-opening retail centres.
