Heavily Patched Carparks With Mixed Asphalt Types Need Individual Patch Compatibility Testing

A Pialligo fresh produce market carpark had accumulated over a decade of delivery truck damage and subsequent patching. The carpark had at least three different patch types visible: standard hot-mix patches, cold-mix emergency patches, and what appeared to be a rubberised or polymer-modified asphalt in one section. Eight distinct patched zones across the carpark.

We applied our standard primer system across the full carpark without individually testing the patch types. Three of the eight patch zones showed adhesion failures — two of the cold-mix patches and one of the rubberised asphalt zones. The cold-mix patches had the same adhesion reduction we've seen in warm-climate high-load environments. The rubberised asphalt zone had very low pull-off values — rubberised asphalt binder is even more flexible and chemically different from standard asphalt than cold-mix.

In a heavily patched carpark, each distinct patch type is effectively a different substrate. Testing a single representative patch from each type before applying full primer takes 30 minutes and identifies compatibility issues before they become failures across the full carpark. We now categorise visible patch types during the pre-marking walkthrough and specify and test the primer for each category.

Pialligo is Canberra's market garden and light commercial fringe on the Majura River — Pialligo Avenue fresh produce markets and the small industrial businesses. ACT Roads approved. Mixed patch type assessment standard for any Pialligo carpark with visible multi-type patching history.

Visual check: cold-mix is typically darker, more uniform fine texture, sometimes slightly tacky. Hot-mix patches are harder, coarser texture, match the original asphalt colour more closely. Rubberised or polymer-modified asphalt has a slightly springy feel underfoot in warm conditions and often a slightly shinier appearance. The springiness test distinguishes rubberised from standard. Rubberised asphalt incorporates crumb rubber from recycled tyres into the bitumen binder, increasing flexibility and reducing temperature susceptibility. The rubber content changes the surface chemistry — the surface is more flexible and has different polarity than standard asphalt binder. Some primers formulated for standard asphalt have poor wetting and bonding on rubberised surfaces. One test area per distinct patch type — typically three to five types in a heavily patched market carpark. Test a 300mm x 300mm area in a representative position of each patch type: apply primer, wait 24 hours, conduct pull-off test. Results determine whether the standard primer is adequate for each type or whether an alternative primer or pre-treatment is required.
