Recycled Aggregate Concrete Has a Variable Surface — Standard Primer Doesn't Bond Uniformly
A concrete recycling facility in Hume had us mark their operations building floor. We quoted from photos and a basic description. When we arrived, the floor was poured with recycled aggregate concrete — crushed concrete used as the aggregate in a new slab pour. The surface profile was highly variable: dense zones where the aggregate was tight, porous zones where gaps between aggregate particles were visible, and surface areas where the recycled aggregate had a different absorption rate to fresh concrete.
We applied our standard film-forming primer and marked. Adhesion varied dramatically between zones — tight in the dense areas, weak in the porous ones. About 25% of the floor needed rework with penetrating primer, which impregnates the variable surface rather than relying on a uniform film bond.
The fix was straightforward. The lesson was: we should have assessed the slab type during the quote, not on arrival. Recycled aggregate concrete is common in Hume's construction and demolition recycling sector. It looks like standard concrete from photos. It behaves very differently under a coating. A physical visit to assess the floor before quoting is now standard for any Hume industrial facility with unknown slab specification.
Hume is Canberra's heavy industrial fringe — the ACT's waste management, demolition, concrete and construction recycling sector clusters here, along with heavy logistics and industrial businesses. TCCS approved. Cold climate protocols apply May through September, as with all ACT sites.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Hume's heavy industrial, waste management, and concrete recycling facilities are part of our ACT schedule. Physical floor assessment before quoting for any facility with unknown slab specification — recycled aggregate concrete requires penetrating primer, not standard film-forming product.
Recycled aggregate concrete uses crushed concrete as the coarse aggregate in a new pour. The surface profile is highly variable — dense zones where aggregate particles are tight, porous zones where gaps are visible, and areas with different absorption rates. Standard film-forming primer achieves inconsistent adhesion across this variable surface. Penetrating primer impregnates the matrix regardless of surface variability and achieves more uniform adhesion.
Physical inspection of the slab surface — recycled aggregate concrete typically shows a slightly mottled appearance with variable surface porosity visible to the eye. We run an absorption test: water dropped on multiple zones across the floor; if absorption rate varies significantly between zones, the slab has variable surface characteristics requiring penetrating primer. This test takes five minutes on site.
Yes for external and unheated internal surfaces. Cold climate protocols apply May through September — surface temperature check before start, minimum 10°C threshold for waterborne products. Hume's unheated industrial sheds can be below threshold in winter mornings. We check and schedule accordingly.
Yes. Transport Canberra and City Services approved. ACT Government road specifications for local Hume roads. Traffic management complies with AS 1742.3 and the ACT Code of Practice for Traffic Management.
