Over-Trowelled Concrete Has Such a Dense Surface That CSP-2 Grinding Barely Opens the Pore Structure
A Beard rural-industrial facility had a concrete hardstand poured in summer and finished with a power trowel by an experienced crew in what looked like a perfectly smooth, dense slab. It was. Too smooth. Steel trowel finishing applied aggressively during the plastic phase of concrete setting — common in hot summer conditions where the surface dries quickly and finishers trowel to maintain the surface — creates a very dense, closed surface layer with minimal pore structure.
We ground to CSP-2 and applied primer. Pull-off test: 0.7 MPa. Well below the 1.5 MPa we expect. The grinding had removed the top carbonation but hadn't created adequate pore depth for mechanical bonding. Ground to CSP-3. Pull-off retest: 1.6 MPa. Adequate.
Over-trowelled concrete is recognisable by its glass-like surface finish — almost no surface texture even after the normal carbonation of ageing. Running a gloved hand across the surface feels like running it across sealed tiles rather than concrete. The bead-water test may show slow absorption rather than immediate spreading — the pores are present but closed. CSP-3 is the standard starting point for over-trowelled concrete.
Beard is Canberra's eastern rural-industrial fringe — Beard Road and Nass Road light industrial and rural businesses. ACT Roads approved. Surface finish assessment for over-trowelling is standard before specifying grinding profile on any Beard or ACT new concrete hardstand.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Beard Beard Road and Nass Road rural-industrial facilities are part of our ACT schedule. Over-trowelled concrete surface finish assessment and CSP-3 grinding for dense, closed-pore surfaces. We've completed 5,000+ projects nationally since 2009 and carry $20M public liability insurance. Every Beard quote includes a site assessment, surface condition report, and fixed pricing. No estimates that change at invoicing. For WorkSafe ACT improvement notices we can typically assess within 24 hours and deploy within 48-72 hours. Completion comes with photo documentation, a compliance statement, and material specifications. ACT Government approved for any road or carpark marking that requires local council or state road authority sign-off.
Steel power trowel finishing consolidates and densifies the cement paste layer at the concrete surface. When applied aggressively or repeatedly, it creates a glassy, dense surface layer with minimal porosity. This layer is harder and more impermeable than the underlying concrete. In summer conditions with rapid surface drying, finishers often over-trowel to maintain the surface appearance — not knowing it creates adhesion problems later.
Yes — structurally it's actually better than average because the dense surface resists abrasion. The adhesion problem is surface chemistry, not structural integrity. CSP-3 grinding removes the over-trowelled layer and exposes normally porous concrete below it. Pull-off testing after grinding confirms adequate adhesion is restored. CSP-3 is more aggressive than necessary for normally finished concrete — it removes more material and leaves a rougher surface that the marking must fill. For standard concrete, CSP-2 is correct. For confirmed over-trowelled surfaces, CSP-3 is required. We assess each floor individually rather than defaulting to CSP-3. Surface preparation is assessed before every Beard warehouse job, not assumed. That means checking moisture content, surface pH, contamination, and existing coating compatibility before a product is specified. We've completed 5,000+ warehouse and industrial floor marking jobs since 2009, and we carry $20M public liability insurance. Completion documentation includes product data sheets, application records, and compliance certification.
