Darwin Wet Season Afternoon Storms Can Drop Floor Temperature 8°C in 15 Minutes Mid-Session

We were marking a Berrimah DC floor in November — the build-up season, when humidity is extreme and afternoon storms are daily. The morning session started well at 8am, 28°C ambient, 26°C floor temperature. By 2pm a storm front arrived and the temperature dropped sharply — rapid evaporative cooling as the storm hit dropped the floor temperature by approximately 8°C in under 15 minutes.

Thermoplastic we'd applied in the two hours before the storm front hit was at various stages of the cure cycle — some fully cured, some in the middle of the glass bead embedment phase, and some just applied. The fresh material in the mid-cure phase was subjected to rapid cooling. The thermal shock reduced bead embedment depth in the most recently applied sections and created a stress gradient in the thermoplastic film.

Darwin's wet season is characterised by build-up storms — the Bureau of Meteorology storm tracker provides the best real-time alert. We now set a session-length limit for Darwin wet season external sessions: no session longer than 4 hours during October-April, so we complete and clear before the afternoon storm window (typically 12pm-4pm). For internal floor marking, the storm risk is lower but humidity spikes can still affect waterborne paint. Session planning around Darwin's storm cycle is non-negotiable.

Berrimah is Darwin's primary industrial precinct — the Berrimah Road DC and logistics hub, government fleet facilities, and the warehousing businesses on the Stuart Highway. NT Government approved.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Berrimah Berrimah Road Darwin industrial and DC facilities are part of our NT schedule. Wet season session length limited to 4 hours — sessions completed before the afternoon storm window. We've completed 5,000+ projects nationally since 2009 and carry $20M public liability insurance. Every Berrimah quote includes a site assessment, surface condition report, and fixed pricing. No estimates that change at invoicing. For NT WorkSafe improvement notices we can typically assess within 24 hours and deploy within 48-72 hours. Completion comes with photo documentation, a compliance statement, and material specifications. NT Government approved for any road or carpark marking that requires local council or state road authority sign-off.

Thermoplastic cures through a cooling phase — the material transitions from hot fluid to solid as it cools. During this cooling phase, the material is in a semi-cured state with reduced structural integrity. A rapid external temperature drop extends the period spent in the semi-cured state and can create thermal stress if cooling is uneven. For glass bead embedment, the rapid temperature drop closes the embedment window prematurely.

The Bureau of Meteorology's 'Thunderstorm Activity' radar loop and the 'Lightning' overlay on the interactive radar for Darwin shows approaching storm cells in real time. During Darwin's build-up, we check the radar at session start and set a session abort threshold — any storm cell within 50km of the site during our session window triggers an immediate session close. Yes — internal floor marking is sheltered from the direct temperature drop caused by storm evaporative cooling. However, humidity within the building can spike rapidly as storm air enters through open dock doors. For waterborne paint (if used indoors), humidity above 80% should trigger a product switch to low-VOC solvent-based paint.
