What is Speed Hump Installation and Marking?
Line Marking Australia installs and marks speed humps in car parks, private roads, schools and industrial sites. We fit rubber bolt-down humps and mark asphalt humps in yellow or white with chevrons, then add the warning signs. Speed humps on public roads need council or road authority approval, designed under AS 1742.13 and Austroads guidance.
Drivers cutting through your car park too fast. Delivery vans racing down a shared driveway. Kids walking between parked cars. If that sounds like your site, traffic needs to slow down where people walk.
A well-placed, well-marked speed hump does exactly that. A badly marked one gets hit at full speed, damages cars and brings complaints.
Rubber bolt-down humps or asphalt road humps
Rubber speed humps for car parks
Rubber humps come in modular sections that bolt down to asphalt or concrete. They go in fast, often in a few hours. Most have yellow and black sections or reflective inserts, so they're easy to see. If your layout changes, they can be moved.
Asphalt road humps
Asphalt or concrete humps are built into the pavement. They suit private roads and estates that want a permanent hump with a smoother ride. A paving or civil crew builds them, and we mark them so drivers see them in time.
Speed cushions are another option. They leave gaps for wider vehicles such as buses and fire trucks.
Marking speed humps so drivers see them
An unmarked hump is a trap. Good marking warns drivers early and shows exactly where the hump starts.
- Colour: yellow or white, chosen to contrast with the surface and match the rest of your site.
- Chevrons or bars: painted on the hump so it stands out from a distance.
- Full width: markings run to the edges so cyclists and pedestrians can see how wide the hump is.
- Signs: a hump warning sign on the approach, plus a speed sign where it helps.
- Night visibility: glass beads in the paint and reflective inserts on rubber humps help after dark.
Repainting faded hump markings is a quick safety win on most sites.
Private car parks versus public roads
On your own private car park or road, you can usually install speed humps without council approval. Some permits or development approvals add conditions, so it's worth checking. You still have a duty to keep the site safe, so humps must be visible and signed.
Public roads are different. Speed humps there are local area traffic management (LATM) devices. They need approval from the council or state road authority. They're designed to the relevant parts of AS 1742, including AS 1742.13 for local area traffic management, and Austroads guidance. On public road jobs we work to the approved design and the authority's specification.
Where to put a speed hump
- On the approach to pedestrian crossings and building entries.
- On long, straight aisles where drivers pick up speed.
- Near loading docks and shared zones.
- Away from tight bends, ramps and drains, where a hump can surprise drivers or hold water.
Spacing matters too. One hump on its own makes drivers brake, then speed up again. A series at sensible gaps keeps speeds down along the whole route.
Drainage matters as well. Many rubber humps have channels underneath so water can flow past, and we keep humps clear of pits and low spots.
How a speed hump job works
- Site walk. We look at traffic, pedestrians, drainage and vehicle types, including trucks and emergency access.
- Plan. We suggest the hump type, positions, signs and markings.
- Install. Rubber humps are set out, drilled and bolted down. Asphalt humps are built by the paving crew.
- Mark and sign. We paint the hump, lead-in lines and any crossings, and fit the signs.
Pair your humps with a pedestrian crossing or clear directional arrows and stop bars. For more on markings, read our guide to speed hump and traffic calming markings.

AS 1742.13
The part of the AS 1742 series that covers local area traffic management devices such as road humps, with their signs and markings. Public road humps are designed to it with council or road authority approval.
Austroads LATM Guidance
Austroads Guide to Traffic Management Part 8 covers local area traffic management. Road authorities use it to decide where and how traffic calming devices are used.
AS 4049 Pavement Marking Paint
AS 4049.1 covers solvent-borne paint, AS 4049.2 thermoplastic and AS 4049.3 waterborne paint. We choose the material to suit the surface and traffic.
Model WHS Laws
Site owners must manage the risk of vehicles and people mixing. Visible, signed speed humps are a common control. In Victoria, the OHS Act 2004 applies.

Frequently Asked Questions
Not usually on your own private car park or road, though some permits or development approvals add conditions. Speed humps on public roads always need council or state road authority approval. Line Marking Australia can install and mark humps on private sites and work to approved designs on public roads.
Yellow or white, chosen to contrast with the surface. Most humps get chevrons or bars across the face and markings to the full width. On public roads, the colour and pattern follow the approved design.
Rubber humps are quick to install, easy to see and can be moved, so they suit most car parks. Asphalt humps are permanent and give a smoother ride, so they suit private roads and estates. We help you pick.
Signs help drivers slow before the hump, so we recommend them. On public roads, signs and markings follow the approved design and AS 1742. On private sites, a sign at each hump or at the start of a series works well.
Often a few hours per hump, depending on its length, the surface and access. We can plan the work out of hours to keep your car park open.
Yes, but the hump type matters. Speed cushions leave gaps for wide vehicles, and gentler profiles suit buses and trucks. We check which vehicles use the route before recommending a hump.
Price depends on the hump type and length, how many you need, the signs and markings, the surface and out-of-hours work. Send photos or a site plan through our quote form for a price.
