What is Bollard Installation?
Line Marking Australia supplies and installs bollards for car parks, shopfronts, warehouses and EV chargers across Australia. We fit surface-mounted, core-drilled and removable bollards, including the bollard AS/NZS 2890.6:2009 requires in the shared area beside an accessible parking bay. We match the bollard and its fixing to the risk.
A car rolls into a shopfront. A forklift backs into a rack upright. Someone parks across the shared area next to the accessible bay. All three problems have the same fix: a bollard in the right spot.
We install bollards on their own or as part of a line marking job, so your markings and hardware line up.
Where bollards make the biggest difference
- Accessible parking shared areas. AS/NZS 2890.6:2009 requires a bollard in the shared area beside an accessible bay. It stops people parking in the space a wheelchair user needs to get in and out.
- Shopfronts and entries. Bollards keep nose-in parking away from glass, doors and outdoor seating.
- Pedestrian paths. A row of bollards separates walkways from traffic in car parks and loading areas.
- Racking and building corners. In warehouses, bollards protect rack ends, columns, doors and roller shutters from forklifts.
- EV chargers, meters and services. Chargers, gas meters, hydrant boosters and switchboards are costly to replace after a bump.
Surface-mounted or in-ground bollards
Surface-mounted bollards
These bolt down onto a sound concrete slab through a base plate. They're quick to install and easy to move later, so they suit most car park and walkway jobs. Their strength depends on the slab and the anchors, so they're better at guiding traffic than stopping a hard hit.
In-ground (core-drilled) bollards
We core-drill a hole, set the bollard in and grout or concrete around it. Some jobs need a new concrete footing. In-ground bollards handle much bigger loads than bolt-down ones. They're the usual pick where a vehicle hitting a building or a person is a real risk.
Fixed or removable bollards
Fixed bollards stay put. Removable bollards lift out of an in-ground sleeve and lock with a key or padlock. They suit fire access lanes, delivery points and driveways that need vehicle access now and then. Fold-down bollards are another option if you don't want to store a loose post.
Impact-rated or visual bollards: know which you need
Not every bollard is built to stop a car. Many are visual or guide bollards. They mark an edge, guide drivers and take a light nudge.
Impact-rated bollards are tested to stop a set vehicle at a set speed. That rating only holds when the bollard is installed as tested, footing and all. The product and the footing work together. If you need a rated system, we install the manufacturer's tested product to its specification. Where a design is needed, we work with your engineer.
We'll talk through the risk and recommend honestly. We won't sell you a heavy-duty bollard where a guide post will do, or a light one where people are at risk.
How bollard installation works
- Site check. We look at the surface, the traffic and what you need to protect. We check for buried services before we drill.
- Choose the bollard. Galvanised, powder-coated or stainless steel. Fixed or removable. Surface-mounted or in-ground.
- Set out and install. We mark the positions, drill or core, fix each bollard and check it's plumb and secure.
- Finish the area. We can paint hazard markings, shared area hatching or walkway lines on the same visit.
Adding a bollard to an accessible bay? See our accessible parking line marking and our guide to shared area hatching rules. Protecting chargers? We also do EV charging bay line marking.
Bollard colours and visibility
A bollard people can't see is a hazard in itself. Most car park bollards are safety yellow or carry reflective bands, so drivers spot them at night. Stainless steel suits shopfronts and entries where looks matter, but add a contrasting band so it still stands out.
Bollards also need clear space around them. Before we fix them down, we check they won't block the accessible path, door swings, trolley routes or fire exits.

Compliance Standards
AS/NZS 2890.6:2009
Requires a bollard in the shared area beside an accessible parking space. This is the edition currently called up by the National Construction Code.
AS/NZS 2890.1:2004
The off-street car parking standard. It sets out bay, aisle and clearance layouts that bollards help protect.
Model WHS Laws
Businesses must manage the risk of vehicles and people mixing. Bollards are a common physical control in warehouses and loading areas. In Victoria, the OHS Act 2004 applies.
Manufacturer Impact Ratings
An impact rating only applies when the bollard and its footing are installed as tested. We install rated products to the manufacturer's specification.

Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. AS/NZS 2890.6:2009, the edition the National Construction Code calls up, requires a bollard in the shared area beside an accessible bay. It keeps that space clear so people can get in and out of their vehicle. Line Marking Australia installs it with the bay markings.
Surface-mounted bollards bolt onto a concrete slab through a base plate. They are quick to fit and easy to move. In-ground bollards are set into a core-drilled hole or a concrete footing, so they handle much bigger impacts.
Only if it is built and installed to do that. Visual and guide bollards mark edges and take light knocks. Impact-rated bollards are tested to stop a set vehicle at a set speed, and that rating depends on the specified footing.
Yes. Removable bollards sit in an in-ground sleeve and lock with a key or padlock. They suit fire lanes, delivery points and driveways that need occasional vehicle access. Fold-down bollards are another option.
Bolt-down bollards need a sound concrete base, so they are not a good match for asphalt on its own. In asphalt we usually core through and set the bollard in a concrete footing. We check the pavement first.
Yes. We ask for site plans and check for buried services before we core or drill, and arrange service location where needed. Hitting a cable or pipe costs far more than the bollard.
Price depends on the bollard type, fixed or removable, surface-mounted or in-ground, how many you need, the surface and access. Send photos and a rough plan through our quote form and we will price it.
