Type 1: Old Paint Bleeding Through Cover Paint
The most common cause is painting over old lines with black or grey cover paint instead of removing them. The cover paint looks fine on day one. But traffic wears the thin cover coat away, and the old paint underneath starts to show again, often within months.
On asphalt, cover paint is also a different colour and texture to the surface around it. In low sun or after rain, the painted strip reflects light differently, so the old line can still read as a line even when no old paint is showing.

Type 2: Scars Left by Poor Removal
The second type comes from removal itself. Grinding takes off the old paint, but it can also take off part of the surface. That leaves a shallow groove or a lighter strip in the shape of the old line. The groove holds water and dirt, and in the right light it looks just like a faded line.
Scars are worst on asphalt, where grinding can strip the fine surface stones and expose the coarser layer underneath. On concrete, heavy grinding can leave a smooth strip that stands out against the rougher slab.
