Volleyball Court Line Marking

Line Marking Australia marks volleyball, badminton and futsal courts in school halls, sports centres and outdoor courts. An indoor volleyball court is 18 m by 9 m, with an attack line 3 m from the centre line on each side. We colour-code each sport on shared floors so players can follow their own lines.

Most halls host more than one sport. Volleyball on Monday, badminton on Tuesday, futsal on the weekend. When every line is the same colour, players argue about what's in and what's out.

We mark each sport to its correct size and give it its own colour, so the floor works for everyone.

Volleyball court dimensions

Indoor volleyball

  • Court: 18 m long by 9 m wide.
  • Centre line: splits the court into two 9 m by 9 m halves under the net.
  • Attack line: 3 m from the centre line on each side.
  • Line width: 50 mm. Boundary lines count as part of the court.
  • Free zone: at least 3 m of clear space around the court for competition play.

Beach volleyball

A beach volleyball court is 16 m by 8 m. You can't paint sand, so beach lines are tapes or ribbons anchored at the corners, not paint. We can help set out the court so the tapes sit in the right place.

Badminton court dimensions

  • Length: 13.4 m for singles and doubles.
  • Doubles width: 6.1 m.
  • Singles width: 5.18 m, using the inner sidelines.
  • Service lines: a short service line 1.98 m from the net, and a doubles long service line 0.76 m inside the back boundary.
  • Line width: 40 mm.

Several badminton courts can often fit across one basketball court, so a well-planned layout gets you more courts from the same floor.

Futsal pitch dimensions

Futsal has a size range, not one fixed size. For non-international matches, the pitch is 25 to 42 m long and 16 to 25 m wide. International matches use a narrower range. We fit the largest pitch your hall allows, with safe run-off to the walls.

Futsal markings include the halfway line, centre circle, penalty areas, penalty marks and substitution zones. Futsal lines are 80 mm wide.

Colour coding for multi-sport floors

When several sports share one floor, colour keeps it readable. A typical plan looks like this:

  • The main sport in white or the strongest contrast colour.
  • Other sports in clearly different colours, such as yellow, blue or red.
  • As few overlapping lines as possible, so players aren't confused.

We draw a layout showing every court and colour before we start, so you can sign it off with your users. We match the paint to your floor, whether it's sealed timber, a synthetic sports floor or an outdoor acrylic court. On sealed timber, lines usually go on before the final coat of sealer, so we work with your floor contractor on timing.

Outdoor courts and school hardcourts

We also mark volleyball and futsal lines outdoors on acrylic courts and asphalt school hardcourts. Outdoor lines cop sun, rain and shoe wear, so we use line paint made for the surface. Badminton is mostly played indoors because of wind.

Got an old floor with faded or wrong lines? We work with your floor contractor to remove old lines and re-mark the floor to a fresh plan.

How a court marking job works

  1. Tell us the basics. The sports you need, the hall size and the floor type.
  2. Layout sign-off. We draw every court and colour for your approval.
  3. Set out and paint. We set out each court, check it's square, then mask and paint.
  4. Hand over. We let you know when the lines are ready for play.

We've been line marking since 2009 and work across Australia through vetted local contractors. Send your hall size and photos through our quote form or call 0417 460 236. Price depends on the number of courts and sports, the colours, the floor type and whether the floor is being resealed.

Standards and council rules we follow for volleyball courts

  • FIVB Official Volleyball Rules, used by Volleyball Australia: an 18 m by 9 m court with 50 mm lines.
  • A centre line under the net and an attack line 3 m from it on each side.
  • A clear free zone of at least 3 m around the court where the site allows.
  • On shared courts, volleyball lines go in their own colour, agreed with the venue.

Council and site rules on every court and field job

  • Approval first. On council reserves, school grounds and club facilities we work only with the owner's written approval, plus a works permit where the council asks for one, and we follow the council's open space and reserve conditions.
  • Safety paperwork. A Safe Work Method Statement and site induction under the Model WHS Regulations, with the work area coned or fenced off until the paint has cured.
  • Insurance. Certificates of currency for public liability and workers compensation, at the level the council, school or club specifies.
  • Working with children. On school and childcare sites our crews hold the state check, such as a Working with Children Check or Queensland blue card.
  • Stormwater. No paint, wash water or grit goes into drains, in line with state EPA rules. We contain wash water and take waste away.
  • Right paint for the surface. Court paint the surface maker approves, so your surface warranty stays intact, and grass-safe line paint on turf.
  • Hours and bookings. Work is timed around council noise local laws and the club, school or council booking calendar.

Colour contrast

Clear, Separate Sports

Where one surface carries several sports, each set of lines uses a contrasting colour so players can read their own court.

“Entire playground remarked during Easter holidays. Basketball courts, netball courts, handball squares, running track. Kids came back to completely fresh markings. Five days, zero disruption to term. Exactly what we needed.”

Keysborough, VIC

School Business Manager

“Six tennis courts remarked to competition standard. They measured twice with lasers, got our approval on pilot lines, then committed. Not a single dimension issue. Club certification passed first inspection. No drama.”

Moorabbin, VIC

Tennis Club President

Yes. Most halls carry several sports. We give each sport its own colour and plan the layout to keep overlapping lines to a minimum, so players can follow their own court.

Any colour that contrasts with the floor and with the other sports on it. In multi-sport halls the main sport often gets white, and volleyball takes a distinct colour such as yellow or blue.
